IMPACT OF HIV/AIDS IN TANZANIA

• In 1992, an estimated 700,000 Tanzanians were
  infected with HIV and there were 120,000 AIDS
  cases
• an estimated 2.4 million HIV cases and 800,000
  AIDS cases expected by year 2000

  and global efforts to protect the integrity of
  families throughout the world. To meet this end
  we work collaboratively with Governmental and
  Non-governmental Organizations that provide
  Maternal and Child Health Care Services. We
  secure donor funds for various initiatives to
  initiate programs that provide high quality care,
  counseling, training and referrals as well as
  health education and prevention.

PROJECT GOAL

• The Linda Watoto Wetu Project goal is to reduce
  mother-to-infant transmission of HIV in the
  Mwanza Region of Tanzania through universal
  administration of nevirapine to all pregnant
  women who deliver in a health care facility.

OBJECTIVES

• Increase knowledge among women on
  mother-to-infant HIV transmission and the
  importance of nevirapine as an effective
  prophylaxis for prevention of mother-to-infant
  HIV transmission by 50 from baseline collected
  at antenatal visits to 24 hours post delivery.
• Reduce mother-to-infant transmission of HIV in
  Mwanza Region from approximately 30 to 13 by
  providing nevirapine prophylaxis to mothers and
  infants for all deliveries in 3 hospitals and 49
  clinics in Mwanza within 3 years of project
  initiation.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

  hospital or health unit for antenatal care on the
  improved outcomes for both mother and child when
  delivery occurs in a hospital or health unit

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

• Train nurse/midwife Project Managers from each of
  the three hospitals and forty-nine health units
  in the Mwanza Region
• Train nurses/midwives at each healthcare
  facilities in Mwanza Region on the administration
  and efficacy of nevirapine to reduce
  mother-to-infant HIV transmission
• Obtain informed consent from women at the time of
  admission to a health care facility.
• Provide nevirapine to all pregnant women who
  deliver in hospitals or health units in the
  Mwanza Region
