1Civista Health Smoke-Free Campus Effective

2Objectives
- After reviewing this information, all Civista
employees will be able to - Discuss how this policy aligns with our Civista
mission. - Fulfill their role and responsibility as it
relates to the policy. - Appropriately utilize tools for approaching all
policy violators.
3Key Points
- A smoke-free campus aligns with Civistas mission
of improving the health of the community. - All staff has a stake in the immediate and
on-going success of a Smoke-Free Civista campus. -
- New Employees will be informed of the policy
during the interviewing/hiring process. - To promote good health, smoking will not be
permitted in the Medical Center, on Civista
properties or in Civista owned vehicles as stated
in HR policy 106. Smoking is only permitted in
personal vehicles during approved break times not
to exceed the allotted breaks outlined in HR
Policy 408. Violations of this policy will
result in discipline as outlined in HR policies
327 and 328.
4Civista Employee Roles and Responsibilities
-
- No smoking by staff on any Civista property
except in personal vehicle. This includes - -Walking to and from parking areas
- -Sidewalks adjacent Civista property
- -Any Civista-owned vehicle
- 2. Do not clock out for smoking breaks and
leave Civista grounds. - 3. Do not carry cigarettes or tobacco
products in open view while on duty. - 4. Do attend free Smoking Cessation Classes
sponsored by the - Charles County Health Department. Call
301-609-6932 for class - dates/times.
- 5. Do tactfully enforce the Smoke-Free Campus
policy with - patients and visitors using Smoke-Free
Campus Guidelines.
5Compliance
- Staff are expected to follow the policy and to
assist in its enforcement. - Employees violating the policy are subject to
disciplinary action as with all policy
violations.
6Employee Policy Violators Approach without
Reproach
- The Direct Approach - Employees
- Approach your fellow employee in a courteous
manner. - Offer a friendly reminder about the Civista
smoke-free campus policy. - If they are not cooperative do not pursue.
- Report the violation to the employees manager.
7 Civista Health Smoke-Free
Campus Policy
- Patients
- Will be informed that the Medical Center and its
campus are smoke-free. - Upon registration, they will be reminded of our
smoke-free status. - Physicians should prescribe medications to help
their patients remain smoke-free during their
hospitalization.
8 Patients Who Smoke
- If the patient states they are a smoker during
assessment, ask them if they have a plan for
remaining smoke free during their stay. - Take time to go over the smoking cessation
education sheet along with basic counseling
regarding smoking cessation. - Obtain orders from the physician to assist the
patient through a smoke free hospital stay,
before not smoking becomes an issue for the
patient and causes them discomfort and agitation.
9The Patient That Insists on Smoking
- On a rare occasion there may be patients who say
they are going to smoke. - Remind patient in a courteous and friendly
manner that the Medical Center is smoke free. -
- Check for MD orders. If medication is
prescribed offer medications. No MD orders
consider calling physician. - Ask patient what you can do to help them through
this. Offer a beverage, back rub, perhaps a walk
in the hall with the patient. -
- Patient continues to insist they are going to
smoke and is ready to light up or leave the unit.

- Let patient go and smoke. Call MD to let them
know their patient has left the unit to smoke and
to obtain further orders. Also alert Security and
Nursing Supervisor. Complete an Incident Report
and send to Quality Management.
10Policy Violators Approach without Reproach
- It is our responsibility to help enforce the
Smoke-Free Campus Policy as it is with all of our
Civista policies. - Approaching someone who is seen smoking and
violating the Civista smoke-free campus policy
can be intimidating. -
11For Those Who are Seen Smoking on Campus
- The Direct Approach
- Approach in a friendly manner.
- Say, You may not be aware but it is our policy
that Civista Medical Center and the grounds are
smoke-free. - Give them a Smoke-Free Information Card.
- Thank them.
12The Indirect Approach
For Those Who are Seen Smoking on Campus
- If you do not feel comfortable asking someone,
who is violating the smoking policy, to not
smoke, give them a Smoke-Free Information Card. -

13The Indirect Approach
- Approach in a friendly manner and offer the
smoker a Smoke-Free Information Card. -
- If the person is uncooperative and/or belligerent
do not pursue. - Report the violator to Security and/or the
Nursing Supervisor. - Carry a few cards with you at all times.

Patients, Visitors and Employees who wish to
smoke or are seen smoking on our campus

15SUMMARY
- Patients will be informed of Civista smoke-free
status. Appropriate signage will be
inside/outside facilities. - Medications can be prescribed for patients to
assist them to remain smoke-free during
hospitalization. -
- All patients are evaluated for tobacco use during
the admission process. - If the patient indicates they are a smoker, a
smoking cessation education sheet is printed and
provided to the patient along with counseling
regarding smoking cessation by the nurse. - Anyone wishing to smoke must leave the campus to
do so or smoke in the privacy of their own
vehicles.
16SUMMARY
- No smoking on any Civista property except in the
privacy of ones personal vehicle. - Assistance to those who are smokers is offered
through the Charles County Health Department,
301-609-6932. - Staff may not clock out to smoke or carry tobacco
products in open view while on duty.
