Current work
  • Hope discussion is going ok
  • Thread on discussion board
  • Wiki for giving some information, but not a
    reliable source
  • Dont just use journals - try some books
    memory, cognitive psychology

3
Next week
  • Check on marks and attendance
  • Bring reports, hand in confirmation etc.
  • Need to have done 5 reports (first mark
    disregarded)
  • Attended (including doing reading week work) with
    only 1 self registered absence
  • Have invited 3rd years to do project on you for
    points.

4
Projective techniques
  • Going to use a projective technique today.
  • Think about What are the pros cons
  • Read into an abstract picture
  • Rorschach
  • deltabravo.
  • wiki

5
Thematic apperception test
  • Realistic pictures
  • Build a story about
  • what has led up to the event shown
  • what is happening at the moment
  • what the character is feeling and thinking
  • what the outcome of the story was

6
Projective from cue sentence
  • You will get a cue sentence
  • E.g. after christmas mary decided to live a
    little more cheaply
  • Write down the sentence, then begin your story
bearing in mind you may want to describe
  • what has led up to the event shown
  • what is happening at the moment
  • what the character is feeling and thinking
  • what the outcome of the story was

7
  • You have got 15-20 minutes.
  • Please work on your own imagine a clinical
psychologist has given you this cue sentence so
you will be on your own
  • When you have finished cover your story and wait
    for the class to finish.

8
Scoring on handout A score if any of the
following negative imagery appears at least once
in the story.
  • Negative consequences because of the success
  • Anticipation of negative consequences because of
    the success
  • Negative affect because of the success
  • Instrumental activity away from present or future
success, including leaving the field for more
traditional female work such as a housewife
  • Any direct expression of conflict about success
  • Denial of the situation described by the cues
  • Bizarre, inappropriate, unrealistic, or
nonadaptive responses to the situation described
    by the cue

9
  • Negative affect in concerns regarding affiliation
    socially rejected, losing friends, marriage
    forgone, loneliness, being secretive regarding
    success
  • Negative affect not about affiliation doubting
    femininity, guilt with success
  • Denial saying impossibleAnne is a CODE name
for a non existant person created by a group of
med students.Anne is happy she is on top, though
tom is higher than she- though thats as it
should be. Anne doesnt mind tom winning

denial
10
Denial of effort
  • It was luck that anne came out top of her med
class because she didnt want to go to med school
    anyway
  • She starts proclaiming here surprise and joy,
her fellow classmates are so disgusted with her
behaviour, that they jump on her in a body and
beat her. She is maimed for life.

bizarre
11
  • Anne has a boyfriend Carl in the same class and
they are quite serious. Anne met Carl at college
and they started dating around their soph years
in undergraduate school. Anne is rather upset
and so is Carl. She wants him to be higher
scholastically than she is. Anne will
deliberately lower her academic standing the next
term, while she does all she subtly can to help
Carl. His grades come up and Anne soon drops out
of med school. They marry and he goes on in
school while she raises their family.

    Achievement, NAch
  • Predicted that people would be motivated to do
    well
  • this is not directly linked to reinforcement.
i.e. intrinsic not based on external rewards

15
Horner fear of success
  • Horner has argued that females exhibit greater
degrees of fear of success than males.
  • A projective technique was used to measure Fear
    of Success.
  • The manipulations

  • 2 Anne tops in engineering
  • 3 Anne tops in nursing
  • The results

16
  • Anne is an acne faced bookworm. She runs to the
bulletin board and finds shes at the top. As
usual she smarts off. A chorus of groans is the
rest of the classs reply. Anne was always
praised for her initiative and study habits
mainly because those were the only things one
could praise her for. She studies 12 hours a
day, and lives at home to save money. She rents
her books. well it certainly paid off, All the
Friday and Saturday nights with my books, who
needs dates, fun Ill be the best woman
doctor alive And yet, a twinge of sadness
comes thru she wonders what she really has,
But , as is her habit, she prompty erases that
thought, and goes off reciting aloud the 231
    bones in her wrist
