9
How E-Paper Works
  • Comprised of two different parts
  • Electronic ink or front-plane
  • Electronics required to generate the pattern of
    text and images or backplane

10
Gyricon Example A Closer Look
  • Consists of a single sheet of transparent
    plastic
  • Each sheet contains millions of tiny bichromal
(2 color) beads in oil-filed pockets

11
  • Each tiny plastic bead can freely rotate within
    the plastic sheet
  • The hemisphere of each bead has a different
color and a different electrical charge
  • When an electric field is applied to the
backplane, the beads rotate, creating a
    two-colored pattern

12
this creates the image on the screen
13
Background
  • In the 1960-1970s Xeroxs Palo Alto Research
Center (PARC) began development of electronic
    paper
  • PARC employee Nicholas K. Sheridon is considered
    the Father of E-Paper
  • Invented Gyricon E-Paper in 1974

14
  • In December 2005 Xerox closed its Gyricon
    operation due to financial reasons
  • Nicholas K. Sheridon is working independently to
    perfect E-Paper medium
  • Several competitors have entered the market since
    Xeroxs initial entry

15
  • Top competitors include
  • Irex
  • Sony
  • Phillips
  • E Ink Corp

16
Future of E-Paper
17
  • It is believed that E-paper will eventually
replace newspapers and books in the library

18
  • E-Paper may soon replace the use of LCD in many
    applications
  • Consumer Products
  • Cell Phone screens
  • Laptops
  • MP3 Players
  • Business Products
  • Advertisements
  • PDAs

20
Advantages
  • Low power usage
  • Battery life of several months on a small battery
  • Cheap to manufacture
  • Applicable to replace existing monitors/ LCD
    screens
  • Portability
  • Thinness and weight

21
Downsides
  • Un-recyclable
  • Has a novelty feel right now
  • May have difficultly increasing acceptance among
    consumer and businesses
  • May have trouble justifying price of E-book
versus a traditional LCD screen version of a unit
  • Sony E-reader 6IN Portable Silver E-book 170
    Pix/ inch is 300
