Flapper Fashion

• The younger generations rebelled against the
  Gibson Girl
• Inspired by Charles Dana Gibson's drawings, the
  Gibson Girl wore her long hair loosely on top of
  her head and wore a long straight skirt and a
  shirt with a high collar. She was feminine but
  also broke through several gender barriers for
  her attire allowed her to participate in sports,
  including golf, roller skating, and bicycling.

• The definition of the word Flapper is of a baby
  bird trying its wings for the first time flapping
  around awkwardly. Fitzgerald defines the ideal
  Flapper as, lovely, expensive, and about
  nineteen.

• The Flapper style was an attempt by women to look
  more like boys, they bound their chests to
  flatten them and waistlines were dropped to the
  hipline. This style was introduced by Coco Chanel
  and named garconne.

Bobbed Hair

• First introduced by Irene Castle in 1914,. She
  had her hair cut in Europe while on tour, after
  seeing all the fashionable European ladies
  wearing this style.
• Louise Brooks, a late 1920s actress, is a great
  model for the style
• There was intense controversy over this style
  with much debate for and against it
• One of the many arguments against was written in
  a sermon by Dr. John R. Rice, an evangelist an
  exert of his sermon is on the next slide

A Sermon by John R. Rice Against Bobbed Hair

• 1Corinthians 113-15 tells us that since the man
  is the head of the woman, and there is a
  fundamental difference between men and women,
  that difference should be symbolized in the ways
  men and women wear their hair.
• "But I would have you know, that the head of
  every man is Christ and the head of the woman is
  the man and the head of Christ is God. Every man
  praying or prophesying, having his head covered,
  dishonoureth his head. But every woman that
  prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered
  dishonoureth her head ...
• "For a man indeed ought not to cover his head,
  forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God
  but the woman is the glory of the man. ... For
  this cause ought the woman to have power on her
  head because of the angels. ...
• "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if
  a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But
  if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her
  for her hair is given her for a covering.
• Throughout the Bible it is stressed that men and
  women are different. A man is not like a woman. A
  woman is not like a man. It is a sin for a woman
  to try to appear like a man. God has one place
  for a man and a different place for a woman. For
  this cause, in Deut. 225 we are commanded "A
  woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a
  man, neither shall a man put on a woman's
  garment for all that do so are abomination unto
  the Lord thy God." It is a sin for women to
  appear masculine. It is equally a sin for men to
  appear effeminate. In fact, 1 Cor. 69 names some
  of the unrighteous that "shall not inherit the
  kingdom of God." And among the adulterers and
  fornicators and drunkards and thieves and
  covetous and extortioners, God put the
  effeminate. To be effeminate is a horrible sin in
  God's sight. And the first sin with which God
  chided Adam, after the fall, was this
• "Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice
  of thy wife..."

Ever Wonder Why Women Shave Their Legs?

• Humans in general have been removing body hair
  since the beginning of time
• Since before the Egyptians people have been
  plucking and shaving, since then they have been
  waxing and sugaring their bodies to get smooth
  and flawless bodies
• Before the First World War Women didnt worry
  about the hair on their bodies because it was
  always covered up with thick layers of clothes

• Once the men left for war the shaving companies
  had no customers to sell their products to
• They launched massive advertising campaigns to
  the women informing them that their body hair was
  unfashionable and unfeminine
• The first ad was placed in Harpers Bazaar
  magazine with a picture showing a lady with a
  sleeveless gown showing her flawless armpits

• A second campaign was released by Wilkinson Sword
  Company informing women that their body hair was
  unhygienic and unfeminine
• The custom of shaving our legs really didnt
  catch on as quickly as shaving armpits did, women
  were more considered with smoothing out what was
  visible.
• During the Second World War a shortage of silk
  stockings led to womens wishes to shaving their
  legs. As the skirts got shorter again with the
  shortage of materials women started shaving their
  legs. They needed smooth legs if they had to be
  bare.
• Because of material shortages during the war some
  women began to painfully sand the hair off their
  legs and bodies with sandpaper
• Even today in some parts around the world women
  dont shave their legs or bodies at all. For us
  it was simply a whole lot of propaganda that
  started the trend.
