Campbell Creek Science Centeroutdoor science
education facility on the 730 acre parcel within
municipality of Anchorage contains 12 miles of
trails, forests and creeks that are BLM managed
  • Opened in 1996 A Hands on the Land Site since
    1999
  • 40,000 visitors annually education programs
    K-12, programs for families, adults, teacher
    workshops, monitoring programs for residents
    water quality, butterfly counts,creek
    bio-assessments, plant collection
  • Has received funding for development
    implementation of 12 educational programs
    correlated with ASD standards that remain the
    core of their programming support for the
    Ecosystem Explorers Program, Earth Ranger
    Academy, Design a Science Day for 3-6th grades,
    and Teacher Academy Anchorage School District,
    Committee for Resource Education, Waterways
    Council, AK Natural History Institute, USFWS,
    USGS, FS, ADFG, and University of AK, Anchorage
    Campus

Chugach National ForestGlacier Ranger District
is located in Girdwood east of

    since July, 2005
  • 140,000 visitors to Begich Boggs Visitor Center
    annually, 3,552 students participated in the
    Forest Ranger Academy, 3rd graders (Tree, Aqua
    Storm rangers) Each unit has pre-and post
    testing
  • Has received funding to re-invigorate its Forest
    Rangers and Explorers programs (snow shoes and
    outer and purchased Elmo computer projector) The
    latter is a summer multi-day camp program that
    uses the Smart classroom newly built on the
    Center in 2005. Linking Girls to the Land (GSA)
    grant brought 100 girls for revegetation of
    gravel pits on National Public Lands Day.

    Natural History Institute, Holland America,
    Anchorage School District, Girdwood Community
    Schools, AK Wildlife Conservation Center, AK
    Railroad Corporation, major marine tours
  • Just implemented a summer teacher Institute,
    summer service projects through the Municipality
    of Anchorages Youth Employment in the Parks
    (YEP) and developing a web page on the Begich
    Boggs Visitor Center to be linked to the Hands on
    the Land site.

    June, 2006 funded Exploring Island Ecosystems
    project using newly outfitted Ecovan funded
    enhancement of Coffman Cove community archaeology
    project and Valentine School funded Healthy
    Soils and Watersheds Initiative, Ketchikan
    Charter School (K-8)
  • Partners SE Island, Klawock, Hydaburg, Craig,
    and Ketchikan School Districts, Cities of Thorne
    Bay and Coffman Cove, Thorne Bay Business
    Association, Wrangell Cooperative Association,
    Project Archaeology, Bureau of Land Management,
    Ketchikan Charter School, Prince William Network
  • Addition of Geology and Paleontology resources in
    the Forest overview section, and three
    interactive websites, Americas Rainforests,
    Migration Science Mystery, and Alaska Fossil
    Database hotlinked to site Migration Mystery is
    currently offering webcasts and chats following
    migrating shorebirds from Panama to the Arctic
    preparing to add ongoing longitudinal monitoring
    studies, Stream Team, and interagency effort with
    NPS on Baranof Island two slide shows and
    Watershed Curriculum posted on site.
