Revelation Now9 Keys to Interpreting Prophecy

Why Study Prophecy?
  • 2 Pet. 119 "And we have the word of the
prophets made more certain, and you will do well
to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in
a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning
    star rises in your hearts.
  • Rev. 2216 "I, Jesus,...am the Root and the
Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."

..
12
Why Study Prophecy?
  • Prophecies, if properly understood, will bring us
to Jesus, who is the Root of David since He is
    God, and to
  • Jesus, the Offspring of David since He is human.
  • He is the Lord of David as well as the Son of
    David.
  • Revelation brings us to a fuller knowledge of
    Jesus Christ, the God-Man.

Apo
13
ApocalypticA Particular Class of Literature
  • Highly symbolic and graphic
  • Focus on the end time
  • Ends with a cataclysmic, historical crisis
  • The climax is a sudden intrusion of the Kingdom
    of God.
  • Mainly found in Daniel and Revelation
  • Other books like Ezekiel, Joel and others also
    contain portions of apocalyptic.
  • Requires its own principles for interpreting

1
14
1. Revelation is Symbolic
  • The revelation (Apocalypse) of Jesus Christ,
which God gave him to show his servants what must
soon take place. He made it known by sending his
angel to his servant John, who testifies to
everything he sawthat is, the word of God and
the testimony of Jesus Christ. Revelation 11,2
  • seĀµ????(Semaino) means to symbolize
  • Interpret Revelation symbolically unless it is
    obviously literal.

1B
15
1. Revelation is a Symbolic Prophecy
  • Example
  • Then another sign appeared in heaven an
    enormous red dragon. Revelation 127

What does the dragon symbolize? The great
dragon was hurled downthat ancient serpent
called the devil, or Satan ...Revelation 129

16
Literalism
  • If the plain sense makes good sense, seek no
other sense, or you will learn nonsense.
  • We must consistently apply the plain, normal,
    literal interpretation. C. C. Ryrie

And I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers he will
crush your head, and you will strike his heel
(Genesis 315).
17
Literalism
  • The Bible refers to locusts with the power of
flight, the bodies of horses, heads like lions,
breastplates of iron and stinging tails like
    scorpions (Rev 9).

This might seem outlandish, unless youve ever
seen a modern infantry unit in full chemical
protection gear coming off a transport
helicopter.
18
2. Let the Bible Interpret Itself
Above all, you must understand that no prophecy
of Scripture came about by the prophets own
interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin
in the will of man, but men spoke from God as
they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2
Peter 120,21
  • No private interpretation
  • Let the Bible interpret itself! How?
  • By comparing Scripture with Scripture

3. Outline Prophecies
  • Outlines only cover the high points.
  • Outlines are not concerned with every detail.
  • The Bible is a History-- only as it shows how God
    relates to his people.

3. Outline Prophecies
  • Outlines only cover the high points.
  • History-- only as it shows how God relates to his
    people.
  • Example Cain and Abel

So Cain went out from the LORDs presence and
lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. Cain lay
with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave
birth to Enoch Genesis 416, 17
Who did he marry? Where did Nod come from?
Story only teaches important lessons of how to
relate to God and consequences of rejecting Him.

4. Parallel Prophecies
I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was
a great earthquake... The sky receded like a
scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island
was removed from its place. They called to the
mountains and the rocks, Fall on us and hide us
from the face of him who sits on the throne and
from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of
their wrath has come, and who can stand? (Re
612-17).
  • Why is parallellism important?

The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there
were loud voices in heaven, which said The
kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of
our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for
ever and ever. (Re 1115).
The seventh angel poured out his bowl Then there
came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of
thunder and a severe earthquake... God remembered
Babylon the Great and gave her the cup filled
with the wine of the fury of his wrath. Every
island fled away and the mountains could not be
found (Re 1617-20).
The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave
him to show his servants what must soon take
place. (Rev 11). So, because you are lukewarm
I am about to spit you out of my mouth the hour
of his judgment has come (Re 316, 147). The
7 churches give a glimpse into the future of the
church with 7 successive periods ending with the
Judgment, as well as a cross section of the
church during the time of John.
  • They all end with the same event.

  • How Many Quotes or Allusions to Old Testament?
  • Over 600 Quotes or Allusions to Old Testament
  • Must compare the prophecies in Revelation to the
    Old Testament first.

ExampleRevelation 125 She gave birth to a
son, a male child, who will rule all the nations
with an iron scepter.
Psalm 29 Referring to future Messiah You
will rule them with an iron scepter you will
dash them to pieces like pottery. Daniel 244

them to an end.

which God gave him to show his servants what must

    Jesus Christ.

7. Christ is the Center
  • The Old Testament Foreshadowed Jesus
  • On the Emmaus Road, "He said to them, 'How
foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe
all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the
Christ have to suffer these things and then enter
his glory?' And beginning with Moses and all the
Prophets, he explained to them what was said in
all the Scriptures concerning himself." Luke
    2425-27
  • "They asked each other, 'Were not our hearts
burning within us while he talked with us on the
road and opened the Scriptures to us?...Then he
opened their minds so they could understand the
    Scriptures." Luke 2432, 45
  • Our minds must be opened by Christ to understand
    the Bible.

Direct Predictions
  • "But you, Bethlehem... out of you will come for
me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose
origins are from of old, from ancient times."

birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Types and Antitypes
In the OT, the Lamb was offered as a sacrifice.

    Matthew 1242

The Antitype replaces the type! (Anti in place

Non-predictive Historical Stories
  • There was a famine in Israel
  • They were slaves in Egypt
  • God raised up Moses to deliver them out of Egypt.
  • He led them through the Red Sea to Freedom.
  • "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of
Egypt I called my son." Hosea 111
  • "So he Joseph got up, took the child and his
mother during the night and left for Egypt, where
he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was
fulfilled what the Lord had said through the
prophet 'Out of Egypt I called my son'." Matt.

Non-predictive Historical Stories
  • 1 Cor 101-4 For I do not want you to be
ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our
forefathers were all under the cloud and that
they all passed through the sea. They were all
baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
They all ate the same spiritual food and drank
the same spiritual drink for they drank from the
spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that
    rock was Christ.

Summary of Principles
  • 1. Since the book of Revelation was written to
Show, Greek means symbolize) what would soon
take place, we must assume it to be symbolic
unless it is clearly seen to be literal.
  • 2. Let Scripture interpret Scripture
  • 3. Compare Scripture with Scripture
  • 4. Both Daniel and Revelation contain several
series of often parallel outline prophecies that
unfold an unbroken sequence of events leading up
to the establishment of the eternal kingdom of
    God.

51
Summary Principles cont.
  • 5. Each distinct series reveals a repetition and
further enlargement of certain parts of a
previous series, always focusing on redemptive
history, specifically on the final conflict of
    good and evil.
  • 6. The focus of these outline prophecies in the
conflict between the nations and Gods people,
    between the Antichrist and Christ.
  • 7. Since Revelation quotes the Old Testament
over 600 times, we must understand the Old
Testament in order to understand Revelation.

52
Summary Principles cont..
  • 7. In and through Jesus Christ both the Old
Testament and New Testament apocalyptic are to be
viewed as a general spiritual unity.
  • 8. All Old Testament Prophecies and promises to
the nation of Israel that have remained unfilled,
must be fulfilled to the church and consummated
    at the second coming.
  • 9. Interpretations must determine where the cross
occurs in the prophecy and then shift from a
literal fulfillment to a literal nation of Israel
to a spiritual application to spiritual Israel,
    the church.

53
Summary Principles cont.
  • 10. The New Testament applications remove all
geographic and ethnic limitations from the Old
Testament prophecies and applies them to
spiritual Israel, the world wide church.

54
8. Gods Promises are Conditional
  • The Blessings and Curses in Deuteronomy 28 30
clearly indicate that there are conditions to
    God's Promises.
  • You will be blessed in the land, If you obey the
commands of the Lord your God (Deuteronomy28
    1-14).
  • If you disobey my commands, I will scatter you
    among the nations (v15).
  • Gods promises to Israel are conditional,
depending on Israels obedience to His
    commandments.

Jonahs Conditional Prophecy
  • A Prophecy of JudgmentOn the first day, Jonah
started into the city. He proclaimed "Forty
more days and Nineveh will be overturned."
    Jonah 34
  • The Judgment ReversedThe Ninevites believed God.
They declared a fast When God saw what they did
and how they turned from their evil ways, he had
compassion and did not bring upon them the
    destruction he had threatened. 35-10

Conditional Prophecy
  • Jeremiah 187-10 If at any time I announce that
a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down
    and destroyed,
  • and if that nation I warned repents of its evil,
then I will relent and not inflict on it the
    disaster I had planned.
  • And if at another time I announce that a nation
or kingdom is to be built up and planted, and if
it does evil in my sight and does not obey me,
then I will reconsider the good I had intended to
    do for it.

meaning one person, who is Christ. If you are in

70
Jerusalem Symbolizes the Church
  • The New Testament applies an Old Testament
prophecy of the restoration and expansion of
Israel to the expansion of the church by
    receiving Gentiles into the church.
  • The New Testament totally disregards any ethnic
or geographic limitations, and interprets Israel
as the church, the body of believers in Jesus
    Christ.

71
Even the Land is a Symbol
  • The LORD appeared to Abram and said, To your
offspring I will give this land (Gen 127).
  • It was not through law that Abraham and his
offspring received the promise that he would be
heir of the world, but through the righteousness
that comes by faith. (Rom 413)
  • Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the
    earth (Matthew 55).

72
Even the Land is a Symbol
  • The LORD appeared to Abram and said, To your
offspring I will give this land (Gen 127).
  • All the land that you see I will give to you and
    your offspring forever (Genesis 1315).
  • He gave him Abraham no inheritance here, not
even a foot of ground. But God promised him that
he and his descendants after him would possess
    the land (Acts 75).

73
Even the Land is a Symbol
  • By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he
would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed
and went.. he was looking forward to the city
with foundations, whose architect and builder is
    God. (Heb 118-10).
  • Abraham and his offspring received the promise
that he would be heir of the world (Rom 413)
  • Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the
    earth (Matthew 55).

74
All Promises Fulfilled in Christ
  • For no matter how many promises God has made,
they are Yes in Christ(2 Cor 120).

75
Double Fulfillment of Mount Zion
In the past God spoke to our forefathers through
the prophets at many times and in various ways,
but in these last days he has spoken to us by his
Son. Hebrews 11, 2
76
Old Testament Mt. Zion
  • In Old Testament times Mt. Zion was the temple
    mountain in Jerusalem.
  • It contained the Ark of the Covenant
  • It was the focal point of Israels worship of
    her God
  • Isaiah foresaw a great revival on Mt Zion in the
    last days
  • The Law would go out from Mt. Zion. Isaiah 23

77
The Old Testament Mt. Zion
In the last days the mountain of the LORDs
temple will be established as chief among the
mountains it will be raised above the hills, and
all nations will stream to it. Many peoples will
come and say, Come, let us go up to the mountain
of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He
will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in
his paths. The law will go out from Zion.
Isaiah 22,3
78
The New Testament Mt. Zion
But you have come to Mount Zion, to the
heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God
to the church of the firstborn, whose names are
written in heaven. You have come to God... to
Jesus. Heb. 1220
Mount Zion is a symbol of the church There will
be a revival in the church!
79
The Sabbath and Mt. Zion
Foreigners who bind themselves to the LORD, to
serve him, to love the name of the LORD, and to
worship him, all who keep the Sabbath without
desecrating it and who hold fast to my covenant
these I will bring to my holy mountain. Isaiah

The Twelve Tribes of Israel
  • I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was
a great earthquake... every mountain and island
was removed from its place. Then the kings of the
earth called to the mountains and the rocks,
Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who
sits on the throne and from the wrath of the
Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come,
and who can stand? (Revelation 612-17).
  • Then I saw another angel coming up from the east,
having the seal of the living God. He called out
in a loud voice to the four angels who had been
given power to harm the land and the sea
    (Revelation 72-4).

87
The Twelve Tribes of Israel
Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees
until we put a seal on the foreheads of the
