Country Introduction.
  • Bhutan, means land to the north of India. A
    land-locked country. Also called as DrukYul
    meaning Land of the Thunder Dragon.
  • Land Area38,364 sq km.
  • Population and Housing Census conducted in 2005
    showed a total of 672,425.
  • Overall sex ratio111 males per 100 females

Organizational structure of NBTS, Bhutan.
  • Health and Education Services provided free by
    the RGoB.
  • Health system spread out in the form of BHUs, DH
    ,RRH and NRH in twenty districts called
    Dzongkhags.
  • Blood banks are all hospital based and are a part
    of the Laboratory Services. No private blood
    banks.
  • Total of 32 hospitals, JDW,NR Hospital the
    apex one in the capital, Thimphu.
  • Blood banks are manned by general MLTs and MLTs
    trained in blood banking.

  • National Blood Policy in its final Draft form
    ,endorsement by the Ministry is pending.
  • National Standards and Guidelines, SOPs on
    transfusion activities prepared and followed in
    the NBB,RBB and few DBBs.
  • Dept of Medical Services under the MoH is the
    governing body and the NBB is the key technical
    and co-ordinating agency for BTS in the country.

  • Data of NBB available since 2003.
  • Data of all the BBs available since this year.
  • Data compilation and ME done by NBB.

TTI testing of donated blood
  • 100 of collected blood is screened for HIV12,
    Hep B, Hep C and syphilis nationally. Malaria is
    mainly screened in the southern region.
  • At NBB, ELISA is the main screening method but
    rapid tests are used at times. For syphilis RPR
    is the screening method and TPHA as the
    confirmatory method.
  • At all the other BBs rapid test kits are used.
  • Donors are informed about the results and
    counseling ,treatment or both are given .

Advances in Blood Transfusion
  • Activities carried out on Standardization of BTS
    nationally at HRD, equipment procurement and
    protocols and test procedures.
  • QMT developed at NBB.
  • Apheresis blood collection to be introduced in
    the next FYR plan at NBB.

Challenges faced by the NBTS
  • Difficult geographical terrain making
    centralization or regionalization not practical.
  • No separate budget allocated for the NBTS.
  • Shortage of trained man power of all categories.
  • Blood donation based on replacement system .
  • Component therapy and appropriate CUB expensive.
