• The University is dedicated to research and
  scholarship.
• Research is expected of all academic staff on TR
  contracts.
• Hence, we have
• -  generous sabbatical leave
• -  rotating HoDs/Deans ( sabbatical)
• -  courses informed by research
• - very high Library expenditure per member
• 
  of academic staff

Essexs culture

• Strong allegiances to the department.
  Departmental loyalties are strong and departments
  are the main units of activity (as cost centres)
• But there are many joint degrees across science
  and non-science departments
• Very few inter-departmental turf wars!
• Acceptance of cross-subsidy
• Good relations between academics and
  administrators!

• We now have a Research and Enterprise Office
  ... (and a PVC (Research and Enterprise))
• The University plans to obtain RAE grade
  (equivalent of) 5/5/6 for all our departments
• Publications rates generally excellent, but
  could do better on research grant income!
