5What is a Podcast?
- Podcasting comes from a marriage of weblogs and
radio. - Adam Curry, co-inventor of Podcasting
1. Create Audio or Video File
2. Post Audio or Video File to a Website
3. People listen/view, and subscribe
6Podcasting History
- Distribution of Audio and Video files has been
occurring since long before the internet.
Podcasting is different because of the
Subscription ability - First called Audio Blogs
- Detailed how to articles began appearing online
around 2004 - New Oxford English Dictionary Word of the Year
2005 Podcasting - August 2007 iTunes holds hundreds of thousands
of FREE Podcasts
7Creating Audio/Video Files
- Well talk about this later, but one thing is
important - All Web Audio/Video DOES NOT equal Podcasting!
- To be a Podcast, you must
- Be Able to Subscribe
- Have episodes
8How does the Subscription Technology Work?
- Real Simple Syndication (RSS) (aka Rich Site
Summary) - XML Web Feed that reaches out to the website
the podcaster is posting on and brings it to your
aggregator (usually iTunes)
9How Do I Subscribe?
- 1. Browse a Podcast Aggregator, also known as
Podcatcher (iTunes, Podcast Alley, and more) - OR
- 2. Find a podcast on a website you like anyway
(BBC, PBS, NPR)
10Subscribing to a Podcast
- Download iTunes to your computer
www.apple.com/itunes - Go to the iTunes Store, Click Podcasts
- Search for your Podcast interests
- Either download individual episodes or subscribe
11So Do I Need an iPod or Not?
- NOT
- Podcasts can be listened to using a program on
the computer or easily moved to mobile device,
such as an iPod. - However, remind me to talk about how some
teachers are using these later.
