Kelly Wieczorek, Associate AIA, LEED AP
BDC Kelly Wieczorek brings with her more than 5
years of experience as a designer, specializing
in green building practices. She is a valued team
member within her firm and has exemplified
leadership throughout the community and in
various organizations. After joining the AIA,
Kelly immediately took on the role of Associate
Director, a new position within the Chapter, to
represent and speak on behalf of interns,
Associate members, and young Architects. Through
her efforts, the Chapter has developed programs
and initiatives that have had a positive impact
on emerging professionals in the local area.
Kelly has completed the IDP requirements and is
currently in the process of taking the
Architectural Registration Exam (ARE).
2 Service to the AIA, Northwest Florida
Chapter Kelly has been an active member with the
Northwest Florida Chapter Board of Directors
since 2008, and has served continuously as the
Associate Director for the Northwest Florida
Chapter since joining the Board. The number of
AIA Associate members in the Northwest Florida
Chapter actually grew more than 20 from 2008 to
2009, despite the devastating economy and loss of
jobs for many local associate members. The
increasing number of Associate-related programs,
and local access to ARE training were cited as
the main reasons for this growth.

4 Service to Local Associate Members Architectu
ral Registration Exam (ARE) Training Kelly has
worked hard to develop a series of free, local
ARE seminars for Chapter Associate members.
Professional seminars are rarely offered in
Pensacola or nearby areas, and the cost of travel
and attendance is often too much for an Associate
member to attend. Taking advantage of local
resources, Kelly has recruited many Northwest
Florida AIA Architects and local licensed
Professional Engineers to engage the young
professionals by teaching seminars on each of the
specific topics relative to the ARE. These
classes are free to Associate members, and
available at a minimal charge to non-Associate
members as a tool to persuade those not already a
member to join the Chapter. In addition to the
seminars, Kelly has also set up a series of
workshops with newly licensed Architects in the
area that act as QA sessions for local interns.
Associates can bring samples of their practice
vignettes for review, or ask for further guidance
on sample problems from the available study
guides. Associate Library Kelly also worked
with the local Northwest Florida Chapter to raise
funds to purchase the current ARE 4.0 Kaplan
Study Guides and Practice Books, and Archiflash
flashcards. With the newly acquired materials,
Kelly created a library, available for check-out
free of charge to all interns/Associate members.
Currently, the Associate members meet as a study
group reviewing material in an effort to prepare
for the AREs.

5 Service to Local Associate Members (2) Field
Trips In addition to the ARE prep work, Kelly
has also organized activities for the Chapter
Associates to get them more involved in the
practice of Architecture. In 2009, Kelly set up
a field trip to a local project site to tour
several of the Navy Federal Credit Union
projects, one completed and one then under
construction. The completed building was
certified as LEED Gold and featured in
Architectural Record, and the project under
construction was striving towards LEED Gold
certification. Several Construction Project
Managers were on site to answer any questions and
offer in-depth project information. The
tour was so successful, that upon hearing of the
response, the local AIA Architects (registered)
decided to complete the same tour the following
month and were able to achieve CEUs for the site
visit. Associate members are encouraged to
find projects that interest them around town,
allowing Kelly to contact the Project Architects
and organize additional tours. The site visits
provide educational opportunities to the local
Associate members, and also provide them with a
change of environment in their typical working
day.

(3) Social Events The most recent addition to
the Associate events has been the development of
the Associate Movie Night. For the first
event, all local Associate members and interns
were invited to a Saturday night viewing of
Citizen Architect, the Sam Mockbee documentary
based on the concept of the Rural Studio. All
attendees met at sunset for a social hour and
then proceeded to gather outside for the viewing.
Word about the event traveled fast, and soon it
was not only architectural interns who showed up,
but also local interns in interior design and
engineering. The movie night is now scheduled to
be a regular occurrence.

7 Service to other Organizations U.S. Green
Building Council (USGBC) In an effort to remain
in touch with the ongoing sustainability trend in
architecture, Kelly was one of the founding
members of the Northern Gulf Coast (NGC) Chapter
of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The
USGBC is the nation's leading nonprofit coalition
for advancing buildings that are environmentally
responsible, profitable and healthy places to
live and work, and is responsible for developing
the LEED rating system. Kelly was nominated
and elected to the NGC Chapter founding Board of
Directors, a position she maintains to this date.
She is currently the Chapter President and is a
member of the FloridaCaribbean Regional Council.
She has previously held the following positions
within the Chapter Vice-President, Secretary,
Regional Representative, Program and Events
Committee Chairperson and Communications and
Marketing Committee Chairperson. During Kelly s
tenure with the NGC Chapter of the USGBC, the
Chapter has increased membership yearly and
recently formed a Branch Chapter to facilitate
green education in the adjacent Panama City
area. The Chapter currently offers CEUs at most
events, available to Architects, Professional
Engineers, Interior Designers, Contractors and
Planners. Currently, the USGBC and AIA are
working on a series of joint meetings, where
members from both groups can network while
earning continuing education units (CEUs). With
the new AIA requirement of earning 4 hours of
sustainable design credits as part of the
continuing education requirements, this
partnership proves to be beneficial to both
groups.

8 Service to the Public UWF Summer Explorers
Program In 2009, the University of West Florida
asked for help from the local AIA Chapter in
developing a summer program related to
Architecture for K-12 students. Kelly worked
with the University to develop a weeklong program
designed for students in grades 7-12. The
program addressed all aspects of architecture
including sketching, concept design, programming,
design development and sustainability. The
students learned various drawing techniques and
were taught how to develop various types of
presentation materials, which they used to create
a take-home portfolio of their work. Kelly
recruited 5 local Architects, including herself,
as instructors for the program. The response
from the students and parents was so positive
that the University has scheduled the program
again for this summer. The buzz in the
Architecture community was so strong that Kelly
will be joined by 10 local Architects
participating as instructors in this summers
program. Education Outreach Kelly has also
taught architecture to pre-K students in the
Head Start program at a local elementary school,
where the students were engaged about different
building types and how they are used . The
students also completed a design project
relating to their own house. She also taught
design and construction to 4th graders in
relation to a lighthouse project they were
working on for the County Art Fair. The project
utilized basic structural concepts and
construction methods.

the local Chapter of Habitat for Humanity for
over 5 years. She has worked on numerous houses,
typically volunteering on framing and roofing
efforts. She has also worked on siding, painting
and landscaping for many houses throughout the
local area, assisting in the humanitarian effort
to provide affordable housing to low-income
families throughout the area.

10 Bringing Architecture to the Community
(1) Canstruction Kelly has been an active
participant in the local Canstruction effort,
which started in 2008. Canstruction is a
design/build competition held in cities
throughout the United States. Teams of
architects, engineers, and interns compete to
design and build giant structures made entirely
out of canned foods. The results are displayed
to the public as magnificent sculpture exhibits .
The public is invited to donate canned food at
the time of the exhibition. At the close of the
exhibitions all of the canned food used in the
structures is donated to local food banks for
distribution to feeding programs that include
pantries, soup kitchens, elderly and day care
centers. The local Pensacola Canstruction
effort joins forces with the Arts Council of
Northwest Florida to display the structures
throughout various local venues on Gallery
Night. All cans are donated to the Manna Food
bank after de-canstruction. Video of first

the Humane Society. The dog houses are
encouraged to be sustainable, low maintenance,
innovative, and obviously dog friendly.
