What Is Figure Skating?

• It is an Olympic sport where individuals, pairs,
  or groups perform wonderful artwork in the form
  of dancing on ice with spins, jumps, footwork,
  and other challenging moves.

History

• The original form of skating originated in
  Europe, but the act of figure skating originated
  in American culture.
• American Jackson Haines who was born in 1840 in
  New York stumbled upon this miraculous idea that
  we now know as figure skating.
• the Civil War there became many crazes that
  swept the nation, two very popular crazes were
  skating and dancing, the idea of mixing these two
  crazes together dawned on Jackson
• Jackson Haines claimed to be the champion of
  America in 1863, but back in that time you could
  self - proclaim the title of the champion, so
  there is no official record to back up his
  statement.

• Jackson then traveled to Europe to share his new
  style of dancing on ice with new on - lookers,
  who loved the idea.
• Haines idea became a success in Vienna
• It was there that the international style of
  figure skating was born it wasnt until the
  early century though that this style made its way
  back to his homeland America.
• Even though there had already been skating clubs
  built and competitions held since the middle of
  the 19th century it took years for the United
  States Figure Skating Association to be formed,
  which is now known as U.S figure skating.
• It was then that the growth of this new modern
  sport grew. U.S Figure skating is made up of
  associate members, member clubs, and individual
  members.

• When the association was first formed it became
  a part of the ISU, which is the International
  Skating Union
• At first there were seven member clubs of U.S
  figure skating, now there are more than 600
  member clubs across the country.
• By being a member of the club you are granted
  the privileges of participating in tests,
  competitions, and exhibitions that the
  association sponsors
• It wasnt until the late 20s that there became
  a set of proficiency for figure skating, skaters
  were now judged on moves in the field, pair,
  dance routine.

Physics Behind Figure Skating

• When looking for physics in daily life, you must
  look no farther than figure skating.
• Friction is a force that resists when two
  objects slide past each other
• Ice skates provide very little resistance
  against ice, so there is less friction than there
  would be on a wooden floor.
• Momentum is how much force it would take to move
  an object.
• In figure skating, when two skaters are dancing
  the one with more mass will have a greater
  momentum and angular speed

• Newtons third law is for every action there is
  an equal but opposite reaction
• In figure skating the friction of the ice has a
  slight push forward which in reaction causes the
  skaters to glide across the ice easily.

Figure Skaters Of The Past

• Lloyd "Skippy" Baxter
• Won two medals at the 1940 United States Figure
  Skating Championships
• He won a bronze medal in men's singles and a
  silver medal in pairs.
• He is credited with being one of the first men to
  be able to do back flips on ice skates.
• Mabel Fairbanks
• Was an African American figure skater and ice
  skating coach.
• She paved the way for African Americans and other
  figure skaters from minority backgrounds to be
  part of the sport in which she loved
