Spyware The Next Real ThreatBy Ryan
NaraineDecember 9, 2004
- Spyware plagues both consumers and corporations,
according to data from analysts. In a recent
survey done by IDC, for instance, enterprise
users labeled spyware as the fourth-biggest
threat to their company's security. They're
reacting to the problem by spending money on
additional security, a trend that will grow
dramatically in the next several years. - http//www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.j

spyware writers use "tricklers" to silently
reinstall spyware components after they are
removed. "This makes it even worse than the
mass-mailers. They change the components
frequently and even when you remove registry key
entries, the program simply reinstalls it,
legitimate companies that market P2P
applications such as Kazaa and Grokster have
built spyware acceptance into complicated EULAs
(end-user license agreements). When you install
the P2P program, you agree in advance to accept

Microsoft (Nasdaq MSFT) beefed up its security
offerings, buying the anti-spyware company
Giant "Better than nothing is usually the case
with these programs," Friedlander said. "The big
problem with anti-spyware products is they don't
have an enterprise management console. Enterprise
customers need to block spyware and have an

What To Do About Spyware -- November 9, 2004
EXECUIVE SUMMARY Spyware on corporate
networks creates IT support headaches and exposes
firms to increased risk of information theft.
Because spyware creators are more likely than
virus writers to be financially motivated, the
spyware problem keeps growing. For example, Dell
estimates that spyware now triggers more than 20
of their support calls. Firms should educate
their users, deploy intrusion prevention,
antispyware and desktop firewall tools, and
enforce sensible browser security settings to
help keep their PCs spyware-free
