TO KNOW OR TO DO TODAY
  • Know emergency routes, procedures, and evacuation
    plans. Review often in staff meetings.
  • Know where fire extinguishers and manual alarms
    are located.
  • Know what is expected of you in an emergency.
  • Know all fire exits and where they lead.
  • Mentally practice going through evacuation
    process.
  • Physically practice the process at least
    quarterly.

  • Treat every alarm as an actual emergency.
  • Know locations and types of fire extinguishers.
  • Know types and limitations of every fire
    extinguisher.
  • Apply safety guidelines at home and when
    traveling.
  • Never use exits not rated as fire exits.
  • Have at least two exit routes in different
    directions depending on fire location.

WHAT TO DO AT A FIRE
  • Foremost, make sure you are safe as possible at
    all times.
  • Call 7747!!
  • Turn off equipment, close doors, and help
    evacuate.
  • Decide if you should fight the fire.

SO YOU WANT TO FIGHT THE FIRE
  • Be sure the fire is confined and not spreading.
  • Be sure everyone has been evacuated.
  • Know precisely how you are going to attack the
    fire.
  • At all times, stay between the fire and one or
    more safe exits.

YOU ARE GOING TO LEAVE
  • Keep calm! Hurry, but dont rush.
  • Turn off equipment, gather belongings, and advise
    others of intentions.
  • Close doors and windows. Do not lock.
  • Use nearest available safe fire exit.
  • Do not use elevator!

YOU ARE GOING TO LEAVE
  • Never open a door without feeling the knob and
    door with the back of the hand. If warm, do not
    open!
  • Keep as low as possible. Crawl if necessary.
  • Go directly to your assembly area.
  • Direct professionals to the fire.
  • Never return to a burning building!

IF YOU ARE TRAPPED
  • If possible, call 7747 and others. Let them know
    exactly where you are.
  • Do anything to buy time. Even seconds.
  • Distance yourself from the fire as much as
    possible.

IF YOU ARE TRAPPED
  • Seal cracks and vents as much as possible.
  • Cover mouth and nose with wet cloth.
  • Remain as low to the floor as possible.
  • Remember, gases and smoke from fire cause many
    more deaths than heat.

ASSISTING A BURN VICTIM
  • First, call emergency personnel.
  • Eliminate source of heat.
  • Remove smoldering clothing, jewelry, or other
    metallic materials.
  • If electrical, turn off power.
  • Hold burn area under cold water or gently rub
    with ice. Do not massage!

  • If fire is detected
  • Activate manual fire alarm system.
  • Call 7747 and state location and severity of
    fire.
  • Determine if you are going to fight the fire.

  • Always evacuate the building.
  • Direct students, employees, and visitors to
    nearest safe fire exit.
  • Direct persons to at least beyond the circle
    drive.
  • Re-enter building only when directed by Security.
