What is a Journal Club?
  • Variety of Definitions

  • A group of staff who meet regularly once every
    other month to discuss and critically evaluate
    recent articles obtained from Health related
    Journals/books.

Why Develop a Journal club in the Department of
Obstetrics and Gynecology?
  • Keep current
  • Promote implementation of new knowledge in
    practice
  • Promote better understanding of the research
    process
  • Improve patient outcomes
  • Helpful as KWLA is implementing evidence-based
    practice and is working toward Magnet Status

Background
  • Initiated in July 2005
  • More developed in 2006
  • Running smoothly in 2007

Making Journal Club a Reality
  • One RN (Lynn Krimsky) and one LVN (Althea smith)
    were identified to organize the journal club. The
    leader and alternate with one person with overall
    responsibility for the project.
  • Both were interested and committed to the concept
    and willing to organize it.

Goal
  • To identify clinical/non clinical problem and
    find articles relating to that problem.

Process
  • The lead will find a book or an article.
  • Copies of chapters of the book or the article
    will be distributed to staff.
  • A discussion will take place followed by an
    interactive session encouraging everyones
    involvement.
  • The group is mixed (inexperienced and
    experienced).
  • The experienced staff will teach less experienced
    or non experienced staff about how to look for
    highlights and outcome of the articles.

Setting a Time and Place
  • Alternate months Wednesday afternoon
  • MDs ET
  • Location Varies. Currently a serious barrier
  • Lunch usually available through pharmaceutical
    companies according to KP policies.

Selection of Article(s)
  • A topic of general interest to the staff
  • Everyone can suggest an article of their choice
    based on EBP, clinical or client related.
  • KWLA librarian is always available and willing to
    locate appropriate articles.

Future Plans
  • Mentor staff on how to Develop/Select forms to
    make a Journal Club Article Summary.
  • Take more responsibility and get more involved
    with selection of articles of interest.
