4
Overview of Project
  • Grant to enhance Social Studies teacher
    candidates Praxis scores
  • Collaboration of all disciplines
  • Collaboration among 7-12 professional and higher
    education faculty

5
Objectives
  • Connect concepts in science to the time period of
    their discovery
  • Connect the political/social actions or events to
    the scientific discovery
  • Covers all natural sciences
  • Life sciences and Physical sciences

6
We learned...
  • Difficult for a social studies teacher to extract
    relevant information from multiple sources
  • Collaboration between science and social studies
    teachers is needed
  • Well let you discover what we learned...

7
Time Line
  • Year 1 to 1899 C.L.
  • 1900 to 1949 J.C.
  • 1950 to present A.T.

8
Lesson
  • Work together in groups.
  • Imagine you are a class of 13 year-old seventh
graders. In what year were you born?
  • Brainstorm the important scientific and
technological discoveries that occurred in that
    year.

9
Lesson Continued
  • Assume your parents are 30 years older than you.
What scientific events happened in the year of
    their birth?
  • Assume that your grandparents are 30 years older
than your parents. What scientific events
happened in the year of their birth?

10
1991
  • Helen Sharman becomes the first Briton in space
  • LEP experiments confirm the existence of 3
    generations of elementary particles
  • The Chicxulub crater is discovered in the Yucatan
Peninsula, supporting the asteroid impact theory
    first suggested in 1980
  • Carbon nanotubes related to buckminsterfullerenes
    (buckyballs) are discovered. The potential
application of these "bucky tubes" is enormous

11
1991
  • The technology age in full swing
  • CDs and computers common household objects
  • George Bush, President
  • Fashion Punk rock/grunge
  • Traditional family become rare
  • Gulf War

12
1961
  • Work on Proteins and DNA
  • DNA Hybrids
  • Transfer RNA
  • Foundation of the Genetic Code
  • Messenger RNA
  • Synthesis of valium
  • Silicon chips are developed
  • Heat resistant superpolymers introduced
  • Space Exploration
  • Yuri Gagarin aboard Vostok I becomes the first
    man in space.
  • Alan Shepard becomes the first American in space
    later this year
  • JFK prophetically announces America's intention
to land a man on the Moon before the end of the
    decade

13
1961
  • Cold War era
  • New explorations in space and social issues
  • John F. Kennedy President
  • Fashion Bouffant hair and tie-dye
  • Family dynamics changing
  • Smaller families
  • Suburbs

14
1931
  • Karl Jansky invents radioastronomy
  • Linus Pauling published "The Nature of the
Chemical Bond and the Structure of Molecules and
Crystals", which established the rules for
    covalent bonding
  • Pauli proposes the existence of the neutrino
  • Adolf Butenandt discovers androsterone.

15
1931
  • The Great Depression
  • Fashion Hats for men and women, dresses for
    women
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt, President
  • Families scattered to find jobs

16
Conclusions
  • Scientific discoveries increased exponentially
  • Discoveries in science develop as needed in
society and contribute to the changes in society
  • Scientific discoveries never cease
  • In times of war, level of scientific activity
drops (for items not directly need in wartime)
  • We were surprised by interest this project held
    for us.
  • One never stops learning
