Civil War North Vs. Southby Amy m
2
Civil War
  • A military conflict between the United States of
America ( the Union) and the Confederate States
    of America ( the Confederacy).
  • Is sometimes called the War Between the States,
the War of Rebellion, or the War for Southern
    Independence.
  • It began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate
General P.G.T Beauregard opened fire on Fort
Sumter in Charlestown Harbor, South Carolina, and
lasted until May 26, 1865, when the last
    Confederate Army surrendered.
  • The war took lives, destroyed property, brought
freedom to 4 million black slaves.

3
North before the war
  • Firmly established as an industrial society.
  • Labor was desired, but not slave labor.
  • Immigration was encouraged. Immigrants from
Europe worked in factories, built the railroads
of the North, and established the West. Very few
    developed in the South.
  • The North demanded high taxes to protect its
    products from foreign countries.
  • Slavery was illegal in the Northern states.

4
South before the war
  • The South manufactured little.
  • Southerners opposed high taxes that were placed
on imported goods and increased the price of
    manufactured articles.
  • Depended on slavery to support their economy.
  • Had conflict with the North

5
Issues that led to Civil war
  • Slavery
  • How much control the federal government should
    have over states
  • Industrialization
  • Trade
  • Competing nationalisms
  • Political turmoil
  • The definition of freedom
  • The preservation of the union
  • The structure of our society and economy

6
Major events that took place in the Civil War
  • May 31st 1862, Battle of Seven Pines. Gen. Joseph
    E. Johnstons army attacks McClellans troops in
front of Richmond and nearly defeats them.
  • January 1st 1863, President Lincoln issues the
    final Emancipation Proclamation freeing all
slaves in territories held by confederates and
emphasized the enlisting of black Soldiers in the
    Union Army.
  • July 21st 1861, The Battle of Bull Run. General
Irvin McDowell attacked the South. The Union Army
suffers a defeat at Bull Run.
  • June 3rd 1864, Battle of Cold Harbor. One of the
bloodiest military engagements of the American
    Civil War.
  • January 31st 1865, The U.S. Congress approves the
13th Amendment to the United States Constitution
    to abolish slavery.

7
Outcome of the war
  • The South was defeated
  • Slavery ended
  • The nation reunited
  • Confederate forces surrender
  • Over 620,000 Americans died in the war with
disease killing as twice as many as those lost in
    battle.
  • 50,000 survivors return home as amputees

8
Significant constitutional changes
  • In 1870 growing disorder led to the passage of an
Enforcement Act cruelly punishing those who
attempt to take away the black freedmen of their
    civil rights.
  • By July 1866, Congress had passed a civil rights
bill and set up a new Freedmen's Bureau both
intended to put a stop to racial unfairness by
    Southern legislatures
  • Act of March 1867, Congress, ignoring the
governments that had been recognized in the
Southern states, separated the South from the
    Union.

9
The Economy change in the North
  • The northern economy actually benefited from
    the conflict.
  • Northern factories were producing more than ever
before. Booming factoring meant that bankers
investors were making profits. This money
supported new inventions and better ways to
    produce goods.
  • New technologies sprouted from this period of
    growth.
  • Boost in steel production.
  • Raw materials were plentiful.
  • Mining and Refining of metals had become the
    backbone of the Northern Industry.
  • The industrial North grew and prospered.

10
The economy change in the South
  • Southern economy was in ruins
  • Business Industry was nearly wiped out.
  • Food and fuel were in short supply
  • Loss of Slavery
  • Farming couldnt take place anymore

11
Government changes after the war
  • Lincoln had been assassinated on April 15th 1865
and the presidency passed into the hands of his
    vice president, Andrew Johnson.
  • The Republican dominated Congress and eventually
took over the government passing series of acts
that limited power of the president and the
    supreme court.

12
Peoples rights get effected
  • Laws restricting African American people into the
    united States.
  • African Americans could not vote, they were
slaves, had to sit in the backs of buses, and
attended different schools than the whites, were
beaten, harassed murdered by the white.
  • Slaves had no rights.

13
Individuals that made key contributions to the
state and the country during the war
  • Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest leaders in
American history. In his effort to preserve the
Union during the Civil War assumed more power
    than any proceeding president.
  • Harriet Beecher Stowe, she was an American
writer. She wrote a forceful indictment of
slavery and one of the most powerful novels of
its time. It did much to crystallize militant
antislavery sentiment in the North, and therefore
was an important factor in participating in the
    American Civil War.
  • Clara Barton, Worked as a volunteer distributing
    supplies to wounded soldiers.
  • Stephen A. Douglas, American politician noted for
his debates with Abraham Lincoln, Douglas however
Brought the reopening of the entire slavery
    question in 1854

14
Political and Military developments that occurred
during the Civil War
  • Political
  • Political ideas also developed marked
    differences.
  • The South feared that a strong government might
    interfere with slavery.
  • Led to conflict between the North South.
  • Military
  • Northern and Southern leaders discussed
    strategies that would achieve victory.
  • The strategies contrasted significantly because
the two sides had very different beliefs.
  • Northern overcame and defeated the South.

15
If the American Civil War would have been
different these effects would have taken place (
If South would have one)
  • Slavery wouldnt have ended
  • Souths economy would be better
  • The country would be divided
  • Blacks would have no rights
  • Constitution would be worded differently
