Students On the Move
  • English language learners are wonderful students.
They are eager to learn and they make the
classroom very enjoyable. However, as an ELL
instructor there are some unique situations that
we have to deal with when working with this
    population.

Students On The Move
  • NAMES, how can a persons name be a problem.
Working with non English speaking adult names is
a learning experience for the instructor. Ex.
Carlos Ramon Jesus Diaz can show up on a class
sign -in sheet in several different forms.
Keeping track of contact hours for one person can
    be hard on NRS reports.

5
Students On The Move
  • Many of our ELL classes have open enrollment
because our students come when they arrive in the
US. The student enrollment sheets are many times
lacking in basic information because of time
constraints of the instructor to individually
help each student. Again, making NRS reports hard
    to manage.

6
Students On The Move
  • Contacting your students in any class can be
difficult. Addresses and phone numbers change
many times. Cell phone numbers are hard to get.
The language barrier between instructor and
student many times is the problem in the ELL
classroom. Finding effective ways to communicate
    is a real challenge.

7
Students On The Move
  • Childcare seems to be a necessity for the ELL
classroom. The challenges we still face are
volunteer caregivers are not reliable and paid
caregivers are very expensive. Even with a sitter
there are still children that want to sit right
beside their parents during class and the parents
    wont change the situation.

8
Students On The Move
  • Transportation to attend class is a challenge for
all students for several reasons. In the ELL
classroom, we have seen lack of money for
    gasoline, unreliable transportation and
especially the lack of proper ID or licenses to
drive. Car pooling works, but is not always
    reliable.

9
Students On The Move
  • Class schedules for an ELL classes are many times
very different than an ABE class schedules.
Students, who travel between countries for
extended periods of time need more flexibility to
attend class. Instructors for these classes, also
need to be flexible with their time.

10
Students On The Move
  • Pre and post testing is difficult in any adult
classroom. We have found that since not all ELL
instructors are BEST trained that our trained
instructors have to schedule testing times and
risk the chance of missing students. Even a
trained instructor misses some traveling students.

11
Students On The Move
  • ELL students with no Social Security numbers
dont count on reaching goals except for
completing an educational level or the social
goals like citizenship. We lose many numbers of
students because they cant be counted on the
federally mandated goals of employment, GED, or
    further education.

12
Students On The Move
  • Citizenship activities, such as field trips,
special speakers and social events have been
curtailed because of the high cost of food, fuel
    etc.
