History of Antigua and Barbuda

• Antigua is also known as Wadadli, which means
  "our own".
  
• Local tribes were the first to inhabit the island
  of Barbuda in 2400 B.C.
  
• Later Arawak and Carib tribes populated the
  islands.
  
• Early settlement by the Spanish was replaced by
  English rule from 1632, with a French interlude
  in 1666.
  
• The islands became an independent state within
  the Common wealth of Nations on November 1, 1981.

• Barbuda is known for its collection of caves in
  the northern section of the island.
  
• The caves contain petroglyphs, decorative
  incisions into rocks made by ancient humans.

• The Antigua Racer Snake is the rarest snake in
  the world, with only about two hundred living. It
  is found on Bird Island, an island off the coast
  of Antigua.
