Title: Delayed Coker Unit Savings Best Practice

Delayed Coker Unit Savings Best Practice
2
Delayed Coker Heater
Tube Skin Temperatures.
  • Delayed Cooker Units have heaters with tube skin
thermocouples used to avoid over heating the
    tubes
  • Multiple temperature readings avoid localized
    overheating, coking and tube failure
  • Previously thermocouples failed or drifted over
    time
  • Reliable thermocouples enable one to make burner
adjustments and clean burners to extend heater
    cycle

3
Current Solutions are costly!
  • Costs to deal with coking in tubes can exceed 3
million per occurrence due to lost production
during spalling and can happen several times per
    year
  • Running heaters at optimum conditions with better
temperature accuracy increases run length between
    spalls by several months

4
Our Results in service
  • Large international energy company, installed 144
ExL thermocouples on 2 DCU heaters at one of
their Texas refineries in March 2007
  • All thermocouples have been 100 operational
    since March 2007
  • These readings resulted in extended run length
  • No drift, failures, or other issues

5
Estimated Savings
  • Total cost to purchase install
  • 1,000,000
  • Savings so far
  • 3,000,000
