Mission Statement
  • To beautify the Port Washington waterfront by
    celebrating our
  • nautical and maritime history
  • through diverse artistic expression,
  • and to inform residents and visitors
  • about the historic, cultural
  • and environmental significance
  • of the local environs.

Bay Walk Waterfront Park Plan
6
Description of Project
  • The Village of Port Washington North, in
partnership with TNH and Residents, has secured
grants and municipal commitments to create a Bay
    Walk Waterfront Park.
  • A key component and the one the Nautical
Committee is specifically tasked to oversee is
the creation of a ¾ mile long path that will
    skirt Shore Road.
  • The path will include lighting, landscaping and
seating, but the artistic inlays and designs are
the main focus of this project.

7
Inlay and Art Designs
  • Between six and ten inlays and art made of
various materials will depict the selected topic.
  • The approximately six-by-six-foot inlays will be
placed along the Bay Walk and will become part of
    the walkway itself.
  • Various mediums are being considered including
granite, mosaic, lucite, as well as various
    durable metals.

8
Nautical Topics
  • Since the Bay Walk skirts a shoreline of
Manhasset Bay, the Nautical Arts Committee agreed
the topics should relate to the Bay. These
topics, in no specific order are
  • Aviation Recreational Fishing
  • Sailing Fish/Water Birds/Shore Plants
  • Shellfishing Resort Hotels/Day Trippers
  • Cocks Mill Coastal Trading
  • Sand Mining Gold Cup Motorboat Racing
  • Boat Building Kayaking/Skulling

Art Design Parameters
  • How each inlay or art topic will be depicted will
be determined by the artist and discussed with a
committee prior to completing the artwork.
  • Artists will be given relative freedom with
respect to the mediums in which the designs will
    be interpreted/created.
  • there are certain guidelines that must be adhered
to based on durability, public safety, ADA
    issues, cost, etc.
  • If art is selected but it cannot be depicted in
an outdoor medium, the art could instead be
featured in a signage case similar to what will
be used to narrate various inlay/art topic and
other points of interest along the Bay Walk.

16
Submission Agreement
  • Deadline for final submission of proposed design
    is April 30, 2007
  • Multiple submissions covering various
    topics/different creative styles can be
    submitted.
  • Submission can be no larger than 11 x 17 and
three color (if applicable) copies of each
    submission is required.
  • Submission must be accompanied by desired
compensation for design of the artwork and
involvement with production of the inlay itself,
although the cost to produce the inlay is a
    separate cost.
  • If the artist will also be producing the inlay,
medium production cost estimates should also be
provided, separate from the design fees.
  • The artist must sign a waiver allowing the
Committee to publicize, promote or otherwise
feature the artwork in whatever materials desired
related to the Bay Walk project.
  • The artist is also free to duplicate their design
and sell once they have completed the Bay Walk
    project.

17
Next Steps
  • Once final submissions are obtained, entire
Committee will review submissions, determine how
    many inlays will be produced.
  • A sub-committee will be formed to oversee the
details of the inlays (selection of mediums,
    submissions, public safety, etc).
