  • Veterans before 1942
  • Baby boomers 1943 - 1960

Keep an open mind
  • Each generation has their own beliefs, values,
    career goal, and views of authority
  • What they want from you is feedback and training
    is different in each generation.
  • Try to know who your teaching, and there learning
    style, not all people learn the same way

  • There are many different generations with life
    experiences
  • Its important not to focus on the job that needs
    to get done, but to look at the person your
    trying to teach
  • Everyone started as the new person, dont forget
    that
  • Try to have a preceptor assessment sheet it may
    help

Getting on the same page
  • Sharing assignments progressively, delegating
    more responsibility over time
  • Make sure questions are clear, concise and
    specific
  • Pause to give student the opportunity to think of
    a response
  • Both partys may have to repeat questions to each
    other, to have proper understanding of what is
    being asked paraphrase

Lets get them thinking
  • Thinking out loud , have them explain their
    thought process. Example Why are you doing
    that? it will teach them anticipation
  • As you problem solves, teach how to manage
    requirements of the job and anticipate what you
    need next
  • Walk them through the steps, dont leave them
    hanging

  • Provide feedback positive and constructive
  • Request daily feedback from them
  • Constructively take corrective steps with your
    student
  • Encourage student self assessment each day before
    you start work. Example What do you want to
    improve on today?

  • Try to make sure you teach them at the
    appropriate level
  • Use both visual and verbal methods
  • Solicit feedback from peers and others
  • Keep the student actively involved
  • Make sure all questions are answered

  • Using teaching methods compatible with the
    orientee learning needs and learning style.
  • Avoid lengthy answers that are more like
    statements - Keep it short and simple. (KISS)
  • Avoid YES or NO answers. Give detailed answers.
