Improving your shot
2A good photograph is knowing where to stand.
-Ansel Adams
A good photographer
- Is dependable, trustworthy and organized.
- Plans ahead for the types of photos the
publication might need. - Anticipates what might happen and is willing to
capture non-assigned shots. - Works to get a variety of people and avoids
getting photos of only the popular people. - Turns the camera vertical sometimes and finds new
angles and perspectives. - Is resourceful in getting close without invading
or interrupting. - Discusses assignments with editors and page
designers. - Collects information for the caption.
- Has the desire to get beyond the obvious.
- Seeks to tell the whole story of a scene with
several different types of shots.
3Dont leave home with out it
Photographer's Friends
- Daytimer/planner/calendar
- Photo ID or staff ID or press credentials
- A notebook to get names and to write notes
- Camera bag or plastic bags large enough to cover
your camera if it rains - Phone numbers of editors/other photogs
- Extra batteries
- Lots of film
- A cleaning cloth or lens wipes
4If your pictures arent good enough, youre not
close enough. -Robert Capa
A good photo...
- Is unposed. No one is looking at the camera or
seem to be aware of it. - Avoids that I know Im getting my picture taken
grin. - Catches action or emotion or both.
- Tells a story/Captures a moment
- Shows creativity and use of composition.
- Fills the frame - Get close
5What's wrong with it?
- Shot from behind, no emotion, no faces, no
interaction, shows no planning
6You got a better idea?
- Get in front of action, get close
7What's wrong with it?
- Too much contrast, Who cares? content, no
interaction or telling of a story.
8You got a better idea?
- Shows interaction, leading looks, close up
9What's wrong with it?
- Too far way, attempts to be creative with angle
but doesnt give us anything to focus on.
10You got a better idea?
- Limit the number of people, get in tight
11What's wrong with it?
- Not a good position or angle
12You got a better idea?
- Tighter shot, in front (could try to get at their
level)
13What's wrong with it?
- Too far away, nothing to focus on, picture
purpose
14You got a better idea?
- Limit subject to 1-3 people
- Show action or emotion
- Get close

Get good shots
- Dont be lazy - go where you need to be.
- Be clean and organized so you dont misplace
items or miss events. - Always plan your shots and be flexible for extra
opportunities. - Dont be afraid to get close. People forget you
are there in about three seconds. Remember that
it is not about you.
