Texas Legislative history

• SB332 proposed by Millsap to help you with DC
  expenses modeled after study abroad. 3 year
  effort 1996-1999.
• Sponsored in Texas Senate House. Compromise
  found in 99.
• Near unanimous support. Passed by vote 180-1.
  Signed by Governor Bush June 19, 1999.

Purpose of SB332

• To provide UTA students in all majors the equal
  opportunity to intern use their majors in our
  nations capitol.
• To do that, we had to find a way to finance
  scholarships so students can afford, like done
  for UTA Study Abroad Program.

Washington Intern Costs?

• About 7000 for semester internship to reside
  work in DC to earn 12-15 hours of UTA credit! UTA
  tuition? Waived in other states for financial
  aid.
• Add some more for transportation and food.
• Limited financial aid available now, but not
  enough.

• Authorizes a not to exceed 1 student fee to
  fund UTA internships in DC, just like study
  abroad program.
• Fees recently approved for annual book
  athletics. This fee worthy equivalent to soft
  drink/snack.
• Used only to assist UTA students interning in
  nations capitol.

• UTA will seek matching private gifts state
  appropriation to create endowment.
• Goal to abolish fee as soon as possible, like
  what UT Austin is doing with study abroad program.

  resolution for review every 5-10 years until
  endowment abolishes fee.
• UTA students develop their own intern program

Focus Group Poll (Yes/No)

• Was conducted on Friday February 8, 2002 during
  Richard Millsaps 3 large introductory sections
  of state and local government. Cross section of
  all majors in required course.
• After video slide program, 257 students
  responded on anonymous paper ballots to 3
  questions.

  from foundations is only option.
