Understanding artificial sweeteners and other
sugar substitutes
Sugar substitutes are loosely considered any
sweetener that we use instead of regular table
sugar (sucrose). Artificial sweeteners are just
one type of sugar substitute.
3
What are artificial sweeteners?
Artificial sweeteners are synthetic sugar
substitutes but may be derived from naturally
occurring substances, including herbs or sugar
itself. Artificial sweeteners are also known as
intense sweeteners because they are many times
sweeter than regular sugar.
4
the yellow packet (sucralose), blue packet
(aspartame), or pink packet (saccharin).
5
STEVIA - NATURAL ALTERNATIVE
And now, in addition to those three choices,
theres a relatively new calorie-free sugar
substitute available stevia. In Stevia sugary
taste is 300 times sweeter than the regular
refined sugar. This perfect form of sugar also
proves as a better alternative to the diabetics
and weight watching folks who can relax knowing
that the stevia plant doesn't have to be
chemically broken down in our bodies and is also
calorie free.
6
There is a whole range of food and drinks in the
store that carry these labels sugar-free reduc
ed sugar light  no sugar added When we
remove some or all of the sugar from these
products, artificial sweeteners are often added
instead to keep the sweet taste.
7
When we see these claims on packages, remember
that they do not mean the food is completely
carbohydrate-free. These foods may or may not be
lower in carbohydrate than the original product
and they will still raise blood glucose
levels. There are also many products now that say
they are sweetened with Splenda. This also does
not mean they have zero carbohydrates. They are
probably lower in calories, but they still
contain carbs.
8
Possible health benefits of artificial
sweeteners One benefit of artificial sweeteners
is that they don't contribute to tooth decay and
cavities. They may also help with the following
Diabetes. Artificial sweeteners may be a good
alternative to sugar if you have diabetes. Unlike
sugar, artificial sweeteners generally don't
raise blood sugar levels because they are not
carbohydrates
9
Weight control. One of the most appealing aspects
of artificial sweeteners is that they are
non-nutritive they have virtually no calories.
In contrast, each gram of regular table sugar
contains 4 calories. A teaspoon of sugar is about
4 grams. For perspective, consider that one
12-ounce can of a sweetened cola contains 8
teaspoons of added sugar, or about 130 calories.
If you're trying to lose weight or prevent weight
gain, products sweetened with artificial
sweeteners rather than with higher calorie table
sugar may be an attractive option.
10
IS IT WORTH IT?
Diet Coke was sweetened with aspartame. The
aspartame is available as Nutra sweet and
Equal. The aspartic acid in aspartame is a well
documented excito-toxin. Exito- toxin are
usually amino acids, such as glutamate and
aspertate.These special amino acids cause
particular brain cells to become excessively
excited, to the point, they will quickly die.
Excitotoxins can also cause a loss of brain
synapses and connecting fibers.
11
Then the ester bond in aspartame is broken down
to formaldehyde methanol, which have their own
toxicities. So, it is not surprising that this
popular artificial sweeteners has also been
found to cause cancer.
12
WHY SPLENDA IS NOT SO SPLENDID?
  • The recent study published in THE JOURNAL OF
    TOXICOLOGY ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH found that
    splenda
  • Reduces the amount of good bacteria in our
    intestine by 50 percent.
  • Increases the Ph level of the Intestine.

13
Do pregnant women can take artificial
sweeteners???
Moms-to-be with a condition called
phenylketonuria (PKU) should not eat foods and
drinks with aspartame during pregnancy. (Women
with this condition can't break down aspartame
properly, which can ultimately lead to birth
defects.)
14
CONCLUSION
Many people use artificial sweeteners because
they think they are cutting calories and will
lose weight. Often, these people will eat
artificially sweetened foods or drinks and then
eat even more of other foods. They may even end
up gaining weight! While there is no harm having
artificial sweeteners some of the time, it is
probably wise to limit your use of foods with
artificial sweeteners. Most foods especially ripe
fruits are just as sweet without added sugars.
Other foods taste fine when you make them with
less sugar.
