A Global Celebration
  • A day to celebrate a simple behavior that can
    save lives handwashing with soap
  • Over 200 million people
  • Over 100 countries
  • Over 1,000,000 schools
  • Growing each year
  • Leading to longer-term changes (ex. Policies,
    program investments, political leadership, etc.)

3
Why Celebrate Handwashing?
  • 6.9 million children under 5 die each year. Two
of the top three causes are pneumonia and
    diarrhea1.
  • Handwashing with soap can cut pneumonia by up to
45 and diarrhea rates by up to 502.
  • Handwashing is an accessible, cost-effective
method for preventing diarrheal3 and other
    diseases.
  • A recent study also shows that intensive
    handwashing promotion is positively associated
    with child growth and development4.
  • Levels Trends in Child Mortality Report 2012.
UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality
    Estimation 2012.
  • Fewtrell et al. The Lancet Infectious Diseases

    Adolescent Medicine 2012

Handwashing Best Practices
  • Most effective when integrated into sanitation,
    schools, nutrition and other programs
  • Government leadership and investment is key (e.g.
    teacher training programs, construction of
    handwashing stations with latrines, etc.)
  • Focus on fewer critical times (e.g. before
preparing food and after defecation) and simple
instructions (e.g. wet, rub/lather, rinse) and
    expand once success is established

5
Handwashing Challenges
  • Difficult to change behavior on a large scale
  • Each critical time for handwashing has different
target users, motivators, prompts, and hardware
    needs.
  • What does it take to change handwashing social
    norms?

6
Our Experience
  • Share your organizations strategy and
    accomplishments in handwashing behavior change

7
Discussion Questions
  • How can handwashing support our organizations
    goals and objectives?
  • In which of our programs could we integrate
    handwashing?
  • Is this an area we should consider when designing
    new programs?
  • How can we celebrate Global Handwashing Day next
    year?
