Title: Hate Crimes

1
Hate Crimes
  • By Tori Kriegel, Alexander Tzedakis, and Kaka
    Leung

2
What is a hate crime?
  • The definition of a hate crime by dictionary.com
is, a crime, usually violent, motivated by
prejudice or intolerance toward a member of a
gender, racial, religious, or social group.

3
Why do people commit hate crimes?
  • People can commit crimes for various reasons.
Some people do it to protect themselves while
others come from a troubled background. Many
perpetrators start out with smaller crimes until
they elevate to very hostile, dangerous offenses.
  • Those who commit hate crimes are not mentally
ill in the traditional sense--they're not
    diagnosable schizophrenic or manic
depressiveWhat they do share, however, is a high
level of aggression and antisocial behavior.

4
How are the victims affected?
  • The first reaction is typically anger. 68 of
victims in a study done by the National Institute
Against Prejudice and Violence were angry while
51 feared for their safety and the safety of
their loved ones. One third of victims developed
behavioral changes to cope with their situation
(this includes relocating, purchasing a weapon,
    buying a security system, etc).

5
Which countries have the higher record of hate
crimes?
  • Mostly in America and European countries.
  • There were moderate to high rises in the overall
recorded numbers of violent hate crimes motivated
by racism and xenophobia in 2006 and 2007 in
Finland, Ireland, the Slovak Republic, Sweden,
the United Kingdom, and the United States.

6
Discussion Questions
  • Have you or anyone you know ever been a victim of
    a hate crime?
  • Do you think that hate crimes are serious in your
    own country and why?
  • What can you do personally to reduce hate crimes
    in your area?
