Introduction
  • Students must apply for available scholarships
  • No application no scholarship!
  • Many of our better students or students with only
    one semester left do not apply for scholarships!
  • Financial need not a criteria for all
    scholarships
  • One application gets you considered for all EMS
    and all CEE Scholarships at a minimum
  • Some top ranked students are usually awarded one
    EMS and one CEE Scholarship

  • Where does the money come from?
  • UW-P Foundation constantly seeking new
    scholarship benefactors
  • Primary source is UW-P Alumni
  • CEE Alumni are extremely generous
  • Mining Engineering Alumni are extremely generous
  • These scholarships have been absorbed by CEE

Application Process
  • Must complete a Scholarship Application Form
  • Online Application Process
  • Paper Application Process Preferred
  • Application must be received by the Financial Aid
    Office by 400 PM on February 15, 2008
  • Applications are sorted and provided to the EMS
    Scholarship Chair and the EMS Department
    Scholarship Chairs (CEE, etc.)

Application Process
  • Department Scholarship Committees review
    applications and rank the applicants
  • EMS Department Scholarship Committee Chairs meet
    with EMS Scholarship Chair and award EMS
    Scholarships
  • Department Scholarship Committees meet and award
    individual Department Scholarships
  • Students are notified by letter if they are
    awarded a scholarship Goal date is May 1

  • You can go back and edit until deadline
  • Include the following somewhere (criteria)
  • Level Jr, Sr, etc.
  • Degree Program or Programs
  • Emphasis or Emphases
  • Graduation Date

  • Part I Why are you qualified to receive this
    scholarship?
  • Discuss how you meet the minimum criteria for the
    scholarship credits, location, emphasis, GPA,
    etc.
  • Do not discuss biographical sketch info here
  • Be thorough
  • Use good writing skills
  • Part II Biographical Sketch

Available Scholarships EMS
  • 37 scholarships available for a total of 17,000
  • Value 300 to 1250 each
  • Not dependent on major or other consistent
    definitive criteria for the most part mostly
    GPA and activities
  • Goal is to spread the available money based on
    the percentage of department students in EMS
  • Example CEE has 22 percent of EMS students
  • Top students in each program are awarded the EMS
    scholarships (CEE 14 for 8,250)

  • Total of 66,000 dollars (2007)
  • Value Minimum 500
  • 57 out of 75 CEE students who applied received a
    CEE scholarship in 2007

CEE Ranking Process
  • Rating Basis
  • GPA 0 to 5 points
  • Extracurricular Activities 0 to 5 points
  • Subjective Rating 0 to 5 points
  • Each committee member rates each student
  • Ratings are averaged for each category
  • Final Rating is sum of category rankings
  • Final Ranking based on order of final ratings

Selection Process
  • Top 10 students meeting JP Cullen criteria are
    sent to JP Cullen
  • Cullen reviews applications and has students
    complete a separate questionnaire
  • Possible Interviews
  • Scholarship winners forward to CEE Dept
  • Co-op offers extended
  • Will not lose scholarship if you turn down offer

  • 4 to 5 names sent to several benefactors
  • Speedway Sand and Gravel
  • WCPA, WAPA, WTBA
  • Karberg-Machotka, Keehn
  • Benefactors select scholarship recipient
  • Remainder of names go back in the pot
  • Remainder of CEE Scholarships awarded based on
    rankings and criteria
