3Key Terms
- Diversity-valuing, adapting, acknowledging, and
capturing individual differences to obtain a
common goal e.g., age, race, gender, sexual
orientation, ethnic origins, religion, cultural
background etc. - Equity-the quality of being fair or impartial.
4Key Terms
- Cultural Competence-is a set of behaviors,
attitudes, skills and policies that enables one
to work effectively in cross cultural situations.
- Cultural Competency- a state of suitability in
being cultural competent.

for all students, their families and the
community!

and Culture (4.3.4) - Study Circles Program
- Ongoing Diversity programming and activities

- Goal To remove racial and ethnic barriers to
student achievement and family engagement in
Washoe County School District - During the 2009-2010 school year, six schools
held a parent-staff Circle and three sessions
where held with students only.

- Outcomes
- Increased communication between parents and staff
from different backgrounds. - Increased participation from parents of all
racial and ethnic backgrounds. - Development of action plans to improve the
academic performance of ethnic minority students. - As a classroom teacher I was able to communicate
with parents in a - non-threatening environment. I was able to see
their point of view on different issues. I have
a lot of new ideas that I am excited to try.

Effective Personnel - Increase the Diversity of the Workforce (2.1.1
2.1.3) - Increase the diversity of the applicant pool.
- Recruitment will focus on increasing diversity
and the number of bilingual and biliterate
personnel and workforce. - Put into action the Diversity Scholarship Program
for support educational professional (classified)
and certified current employees. -
