Key Terms
  • Diversity-valuing, adapting, acknowledging, and
    capturing individual differences to obtain a
    common goal e.g., age, race, gender, sexual
    orientation, ethnic origins, religion, cultural
    background etc.
  • Equity-the quality of being fair or impartial.

  • Cultural Competence-is a set of behaviors,
    attitudes, skills and policies that enables one
    to work effectively in cross cultural situations.
  • Cultural Competency- a state of suitability in
    being cultural competent.

  • A District Equity Team led by the Equity
    Alliance at ASU will facilitate follow-up
    sessions to develop action plans to embed
    policies and practices.

Study Circles
  • Goal To remove racial and ethnic barriers to
    student achievement and family engagement in
    Washoe County School District
  • During the 2009-2010 school year, six schools
    held a parent-staff Circle and three sessions
    where held with students only.

  • Outcomes
  • Increased communication between parents and staff
    from different backgrounds.
  • Increased participation from parents of all
    racial and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Development of action plans to improve the
    academic performance of ethnic minority students.
  • As a classroom teacher I was able to communicate
    with parents in a
  • non-threatening environment. I was able to see
    their point of view on different issues. I have
    a lot of new ideas that I am excited to try.
