8Competitive Solar Heating Systems for Residential
Buildings
Main Objective
The project has two major aims The RD part,
which aims to develop solar thermal systems that
can compete with conventional energy sources on a
commercial basis. The educational part aims to
transfer the accumulated experiences on design,
construction and implementation to students and
actors in the field. The project focuses on
combined solar heating systems. The scientific
standard, the position in the market and the
access to new technology make the participants to
a unique team for the task to develop and
implement combined solar heating systems that are
competitive with systems utilizing conventional
fossil energy sources. The project is mainly an
innovation project, but it includes also some
activities listed for the scientific programs.
These are Ph.D. and post-doctoral fellowships and
network activities for research training.

9Underground cold storage for hybrid cooling of
buildings
Main Objective
The purpose of this project is to create a Nordic
network named ReKyl, with the task of sharing,
expanding, exploiting and disseminating knowledge
within design and optimisation of underground
cold storages (A-TES), using computerised tools
and methods as well as total system design and
practical experience. The topic of the project is
based on actual projects to collect, exchange,
use and develop information, experience and
simulation models for designing active cooling
storage in connection with cooling of buildings,
including possible interaction with thermo-active
building structures (hydraulic surface
cooling/heating systems) and absorption
cooling/heat pumps. The goals are to enhance the
design of cooling systems, which can reduce the
energy consumption and CO2 emission related to
cooling by 75-80, integrate use of district
heating and renewable energy for cooling and
utilise re-cooling energy for heating purpose.

10Large-scale integration of wind energy into the
Nordic grid (The project is not yet started)
Main Objective
- The overall objective of this proposal is to
assist the planning and design of Renewable
Energy Sources, especial wind farms by
facilitating a coordinated effort to develop wind
farm models suitable for design of wind farms,
their grid connection and energy distribution,
and evaluating power system dynamic and transient
stability. The effort comprises the following
immediate objectives - Establishment of a Nordic forum for exchanging
knowledge and experience within the field of wind
farm modelling for power system studies. - Establishing and providing models of wind
turbines and wind farms - Highlight important design issues through case
studies
Reference committee
will be established with wind energy companies,
manufacturers, utilities and the researches
within the project to guide the project in the
most efficient direction

11Comparison of Nordic Regulatory Models
Main Objective
- The objective of the project, is to describe,
compare and evaluate the different regulatory
models for grid companies in the four Nordic
countries (Finland, Sweden, Denmarkand Norway),
and to assess their structure of incentives. - The project will consist of the following
activities - Description of the four different models
- Evaluate the structure of incentives embedded in
the different models - Describe and evaluate the different benchmark
models used in the four countries, and what - role this models play in the regulatory regimes
in each country - Compare four different model companies (one for
each country) to each of the four models.

14New metal hydrides for hydrogen storage
Main Objective
- To develop new metal hydrides (mainly based on
light metals but also materials with efficient
hydrogen packing) for hydrogen storage satisfying
the IEA goal. - To involve the leading Nordic groups involved in
research on materials for hydrogen storage. In
particular the object is to strengthen the Nordic
collaboration. This joint effort will
significantly increase the total capability in
this field in the Nordic countries. - To increase the number of research tools
available to the participating groups. This
involves both experiment methods (synthesis and
characterisation) and modelling. - To train and educate doctoral students in
experimental and theoretical work in the field.
The wide range of expertise will be important for
recruiting doctoral students.

17Hydrogen Energy Foresight in the Nordic Countries
2003 -2005
Project Group
Main Objective
To identity, select and present a number of
scenarios illustrating the prospects for a future
hydrogen society with respect to technology,
application and market issues for a broad
spectrum of socio-technical conditions in a
timeframe of 2003 to 2030. To explore the roads
to commercialisation, from identifying potential
socio-technical scenarios to developing solutions
all along the value chain (production, transport,
storage, and utilisation), including the
identification of unique market opportunities
where hydrogen based systems are competitive in
the short term and with growth potential towards
longer-term goals. To contribute as decision
support for companies and research institutes in
order to prioritise research, development and
commercialisation of hydrogen technologies,
including the required infrastructure
technologies. To maintain and develop the
scientific and industrial networks within
hydrogen technologies as a necessary step towards
gaining critical mass where national resources
are not sufficient to achieve top results. To
analyse the implementation and implications of
the hydrogen technology in the Nordic countries
and assist governmental decision-makers in making
effective framework policies for the hydrogen
society, including science, technology,
innovation, environment and energy policies.
