- The following tutorial is for baseball 2 man
mechanics
- The following situations are meant to serve as a
guide based on the field mechanic class
- All situations assume a normal fielder setup
- All situations assume no interference or
obstruction
- All situations have no umpire going out a fly

2Plate Mechanics
- Has all CATCH NO CATCH calls
- Has call on Batter Runner TO 1st base.
- Help with pulled foot request by base umpire
Base Mechanics
- Has tag up responsibilities
- Help with check swing calls
3There are 3 starting positions for the Base Umpire
About ½ way between 2nd and the pitchers mound
off the left shoulder of the pitcher
About ½ way between 2nd and the pitchers mound

An imaginary line from home plate by the edge of
the mound

4When the Umpire is in field, he/she should stay
in the working area to be ready to make calls

From here the BU can move parallel to the base
line to make calls at 1st
Start 10-15 behind 1st base in foul territory

8Fly Ball position
- Always try to move perpendicular to the ball
- Move as far as needed to make the call
- When the Fly ball is close to the foul line, the
Plate umpire should be straddling the foul line.

- The Base Umpire has all tag up responsibilities.
- If there are runners on 2nd and 3rd, the plate
umpire has the catch and tag up at 3rd

12Responsibilities and Positions for Ground Ball
- Plate Umpire should be ready to move up the lines.
- Base Umpire should always position himself /
herself far enough away from the nearest fielder
to avoid interfering with the play.
- Plate Umpire has all catch no-catch
responsibilities.
- The Base Umpire has all tag up responsibilities.
