Some history
  • From Chris Rusbridge
  • Sent 08 November 2000 1131
  • To Peter Holmes
  • Cc Donald Bell 'Andrew Wale' 'Mark Denham'
  • Subject Plans for a university 'e-prints'
    service
  • Peter, at a meeting yesterday, we decided to go
    ahead with establishment of
  • a service to hold electronic pre-prints and if
    possible electronic re-prints
  • of articles published by GU staff. We would plan
    to build this service using
  • emerging free software from the 'Open Archives
    Initiative', which will
  • support inter-operability amongst many or all
    such servers, including for
  • example the Los Alamos Physics pre-print server,
    the REPEc economics
  • distributed servers and the NCSTRL computing
    science servers.
  • Our hope is to be able to launch this service in
    late January 2001. We would
  • like it to be sooner but realism must prevail. We
would like to make a good
  • splash at launch time, and we would like to use
the RAE as an initial lever
  • to get the service populated...

More history (phase 1)

  • ePrints beta installed, then version 1, version
    2, etc

    many times
  • Pre-prints and re-prints all together
  • Various structures trialled
  • Daedalus funding granted late 2002

    became) ePrints.org software (Harnad)
  • WoPEc distributed subject repository based on
    harvested metadata (Krichel)

  • From herbert van de sompel ltherbertv_at_CS.Cornell.E
    DUgt
  • To UPS List ltups_at_vole.lanl.govgt
  • Subject OAI a service provider
  • hi,
  • The first Santa Fe compliant service provider has
    been registered at
  • http//www.openarchives.org/sfc/sfc_services.htm
    .
  • It is a cross e-print search engine created at
    Old Dominion University.
  • Some may recognize the interface
    http//arc.cs.odu.edu/ since it is
  • very similar to the one used in the UPS
    prototype. Behind the scenes,
  • however, things have changed quite fundamentally.

Some meandering...
  • Access vs preservation?
  • Whats the promise?
  • Its a bet, I mean a risk!
  • Avoid the pathological case... Use common,
    well-documented formats
  • Quality measures?
  • RLG for preservation
  • DINI for access repositories

Next steps?
  • JISC Repositories, Preservation and Access
    Programme
  • Data
  • Link to RAE

  • Current workflow rather than retrospective
    loading
  • How we do things round here... Soton ECS
  • Tipping point?
  • NL Cream of Science...
  • gt2000 papers per year?
  • Its the culture, stupid!
