What is Cast Iron and how is it Made?

• It is made by remelting raw iron scrap iron and
  steel
• Phosphorus and sulfur is removed
• Contains more than 2 carbon and 1 silicon
• Melted in a blast furnace

Advantages It is very strong and can be molded
into almost any form for mass production. Also
the silicon improves the products corrosion
resistance.
Disadvantages It is brittle and once a crack
begins it is nearly impossible to stop. It has
less tensile strength and shock resistance than
steel.

• Non toxic
• Develops a non stick surface
• Low cost

• 10 lighter than steel
• Can be heat treated without carburizing
• Will not distort
• Produces up to 1,200 sfm
• It can be drawn into rods
