2Background
- The population of SURAT city doubled up in the
last decade and is expected to cross 4.0 millions
plus by the end of next decade. - Due to fast industrial / commercial development
of the city, the growth of personalised vehicles
was found 10 annually. The vehicle population by
the end of November 2006 is 12.93 Lacs. - These factors have resulted into more accidents
and chaotic Traffic Problems in the city.

7Actions Taken by Surat Municipal Corporation
- SMC is keen to solve the Traffic Problems
arising out of population growth increase in
the personal vehicles - The Traffic Transportation plan of the city for
the Horizon year 2014 has been prepared (by CRRI,
New Delhi). - An Integrated public Transit System study has
been entrusted to Consulting Engineering Service
(I) Pvt. Ltd. - The interim proposals in both the
cases has - been received. Quite a few short
term proposals - given by CRRI have been implemented.
- SMC is Starting City Bus Operation on PPP basis
by the end of May-2007. - 4. Govt. of Gujarat has given the sanction vide
GR. No. MTA 182005-5778 KH Dt. 17-5-2006
