Characters

• His parents call him Vanya. His Jewish name is
  Itzak Shlomo. His friends call Ivan.
• His parents names are not revealed in the book.
  They simply go by Father and Mother.
• Ruthie is Ivans fiance.
• Katerina is a girl Ivan meets in the woods that
  he proposes to to save their lives.
• Baba Yaga is a witch from the ninth century.

Ivan

• Ivan is the main character of the story. His
  whole life his parents called him Vanya. Then, as
  they prepare to move to America from Russia, they
  tell him that his Jewish name is Itzak Shlomo.

Mother/Father

• Father is a professor at a college in New York
  He likes to study old languages and script. He
  and Ivan enjoy deciphering these old languages
  and then speaking together in them.

• Mother is a housewife who knows very little
  English. She still believes in old Russian fairy
  tales and old Russian traditions. She is against
  Ivan and Ruthies wedding.

Ruthie

• Ruthie is Ivans fiancé. She and Ivan meet at a
  Presbyterian wedding, six weeks before Ivan was
  planning to go back to Kiev, Russia, for his
  dissertation. They instantly fall in love and
  they become engaged.

Katerina

• Katerina is a ninth century princess. She lays in
  a trance, in a time-less clearing in the woods
  for almost 1000 years. She cannot wake up until
  someone to leap the chasm surrounding the
  pedestal she laid upon.

Baba Yaga

• Baba Yaga is a ninth century witch often referred
  to as The Widow. She is the one who put
  Katerina in the trance. Baba Yaga gets most of
  her power from the god of winter, Bear.

Setting

• This story starts out in the 20th century. It
  then goes back into the ninth century, then back
  forward to the 20th century again.
• The book starts out in Kiev, Russia. They then go
  to modern day New York, then Ivan returns to Kiev
  to finish his dissertation and visit the
  relatives who sheltered Ivan and his family many
  years ago.

Plot

• Ivan finds a clearing covered completely by
  leaves. When he gets closer, it becomes apparent
  that there is a pedestal with a girl on it. The
  leaves surrounding it start to swirl and
  something starts to come out of the leaves. The
  thing under the leaves scares the young Ivan away
  and he runs back to the house. Years later, when
  he returns to finish his dissertation, he returns
  to the clearing, to determine whether he imagined
  the whole encounter or if it was real.

Plot (continued)

• When he gets to the clearing, the leaves swirl
  away, just like they had so many years ago. The
  girl is still there. This time he doesnt run
  away and waits for the leaves to settle. When the
  leaves clear, Ivan sees an enormous bear. All of
  a sudden, the tree next to him explodes. He looks
  and realizes that the bear is throwing boulders.
  He starts running around the pit and finally
  throws a rock and hits the bear in the eye. He
  jumps the pit and kisses the girl. Then the bear
  climbs up the pedestal and is about to kill them
  when the girl tells Ivan to marry her. He says
  yes and the bear disappears. It turns out that
  the girl is Katerina, princess of a town in the
  ninth century. They go back to the ninth century
  and Ivan marries Katerina. The witch Baba Yaga
  then tries to kill them and they return to the
  20th century. She then follows them and they hide
  in Ivans house, with his parents. His mother
  knows a few charms that keeps Baba Yaga out. They
  return to the ninth century and Baba Yaga follows
  them again. Ivan and Katerina then defeat her
  using simple bombs and explosives.
