Title: Philosophy of Engineering Design Abdulkadir Erden Primitive
1Philosophy of Engineering Design
2INTRODUCTION
- The main philosophy behind all of the engineering
and engineering design activities is to serve the
people, society and mankind. - This is why the engineering design is defined as
an activity to satisfy a need. A need is real
only if it is defined and identified by a human. - Needs whether factual or fancied, moral or
amoral, present or future, important or
unimportant, have been and are the starting
points in engineering design.
3Engineers and designers are at service of the
mankind.
Needs whether factual or fancied, moral or
amoral, present or future, important or
unimportant, have been and are starting points in
engineering design.
4Engineering design is a unique activity where a
physical design artifact is created from an
abstract need after human imagination. Although
the methodology is dependent on the particular
design need, all of the engineering design
activities have some common engineering features.
- Engineering design is densely creative at the
beginning, and significance of creativity
decreases towards the end of the process, - Engineering design is iterative during the whole
design process both at macro scale and at element
scale, - Engineering design is methodological (productive)
towards the end of the design process.
5ENGINEERING CREATIVITY
- is a process in which a set of machine
components is selected to perform a predetermined
function. - is the act of finding possible sets of available
machine elements to satisfy a pre-defined need.
6Features...
- Designer's background education and experience
are effective and significant factors in
engineering creativity. - End product of the engineering creativity is a
description of a system, machine, tool, goods, or
any object. - It may be a free-hand sketch for engineering
design. - New ideas purge out in a short time usually after
a relatively long period of creative thinking or
mental focusing on the design need.

14Among the many factors which effect creativity in
design are designers experience, designers
ability, economic factors, and designers own
preference.

16features of engineering design creativity
- Engineering creativity is more methodological
and systematic then the artistic creativity. - Engineering creativity depends on the scope of
the available elements (building stones) of a
product. The larger the number of machine
elements that a designer can access, it is more
likely to develop the best possible design. This
is the condition where mechatronic technology has
actually started. - Engineering creativity is largely dependent on
the designers own educational background and own
personal experience. - Market conditions all alone may change the
design product, and therefore the engineering
creativity is dependent on the market conditions. - Available technology is probably the most
important factor in engineering design.
17Level of technological development affects the
design products.

Electronics

18Issues to remember in any design
- The stage and level of industrialization of the
society is a factor in design. - The social traditions.
- Sophistication and complexity of the design
product. - Intended lifetime.
- Economical conditions.
- Geographical and climatic conditions.

22A product should be designed to function under
all of the possible severe environmental
conditions.
23Remember also...
- Design should not violate scientific rules,
- Design should be economical,
- Design should be compatible to psychology and
ergonomics, - Design must satisfy requirements stated in
standards, laws, regulations, - Level of education and capabilities of the user,
- Production facilities.
24-
-
- Engineering design is naturally an iterative
process.
25Iterative nature of design
26Improvement of Level of Design with Time / Effort
27METHODOLOGICAL / PRODUCTIVE FEATURE of
ENGINEERING DESIGN
- Productivity is literary defined as efficiency in
industrial production. - Work breakdown of design project.
- Detail design computations.
- Parameter optimization of a developed system.
- Adapting the developed basic design for the
particular conditions. - Report writing for the formal presentation
28MECHATRONICSAN ENGINEERING PHILOSOPHY

MAPPING
mechatronic concepts required to consider at
the "definition of the need" stage Designers need
to know
- Flexibility,
- Robustness,
- Compactness,
- Ergonomy,
- Economy.
32Why is different?
- 1) Tools for the mechatronic design may be
different from tools of the conventional design. - 2) Available components for a mechatronic design,
both in variety and composition are more than the
conventional design. This makes the conceptual
design more flexible, but increases number of
alternative design solutions to impractical high
values.
