Title: Welcome to the Arkansas River Historical Society
1Welcome to theArkansas River Historical Society
The Arkansas River Historical Society seeks to
preserve history and insure public awareness of
the Arkansas River and the development of its
basin. Through the acquisition, research,
interpretation, and display of artifacts, and the
development of educational programs, the
contribution of the river to the future will be
secured by the preservation of its past.
2The Arkansas River Historical Society Museum is
located in the City of Tulsa Rogers County Port
Authority Building at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa
3The Museum Entrance is in the Port Authority
Lobby.
4Historical Displays tell the story of the river
and the navigation system.
5The many benefits of the waterway are emphasized
in graphic displays.
6There is a working model of a lock dam.
7Exhibits include an overview of the steamboat era
and models of modern ocean-going vessels.
8A lobby aerial photo of the Port provides a
starting reference for driving tours.
9Another goal of the Historical Society is to
honor those who did so much to make this
navigation system a reality. This is also
achieved by our annual Arkansas River Hall of
Fame awards.
10Each year we provide educational tours for
thousands of students and adults.
11In 2004 a small park and picnic area was created
for the convenience of individuals and tour
groups.
12The Historical Society is the source of exhibits
at the visitors center at Lock Dam 18.
We also have a traveling exhibit we take to
conferences, schools, and international cultural
events.
13The Charley Border was the Ports chief workboat
for nearly 30 years.
14In 2004 it was moved from the channel to dry-dock
in preparation for its new career.
15In 2006, after renovation, it was moved to the
educational center site.
16It will become the focal point of a new Maritime
Educational Center.
Charley Border Towboat Exhibit and Educational
