Title: Columbia College

1
Columbia College
  • Server Environment

2
Goals
  • Improved accessibility to network resources
  • Improved server network reliability
  • Increased storage capacity for data
  • Better utilization of resources
  • Consolidation of resources
  • Increased control over client workstations
  • Increased security
  • Disaster Recovery

3
Current Server Infrastructure
  • 5 domains, each with separate user accounts,
    printers, workstations and purposes
  • Lab
  • Faculty Staff
  • Web
  • Payroll
  • Proxy

4
Server Operating Systems
  • All servers currently in production in our 5
    domains utilize Microsoft NT4.0 software
  • Were in the process of migrating to Microsoft
    Windows 2000 Server.

5
Why upgrade to Windows 2000 Server?
  • Advantages
  • Active Directory integration
  • Group Policy
  • Automatic updates to clients
  • Includes clustering technology
  • Includes Terminal Services technology
  • Many programs are not supported on NT 4.0, such
    as Exchange 2000
  • NT 4.0 is no longer being supported by Microsoft
  • Disadvantages
  • Equipment upgrades to servers are necessary to
    support W2K Server
  • Knowledge pool is smaller because the software is
    newer
  • Requires the use of Microsoft XP on clients to
    fully utilize all features

6
Future Columbia College Server Environment
  • Incorporates all 5 domains into 1 domain, with
    same users, workstations printers
  • 1 Active Directory
  • Group policy is used to control access to
    resources

7
Future Columbia College Server Environment
8
How do we get there?
  • Upgrade workstations to Windows XP
  • Migrate user accounts and workstation accounts
    from ccis_edu to ccis.edu
  • Migrate printers from ccis_edu to ccis.edu
  • Move user files and directories from old domain
    to new domain
  • Join workstations to the new domain

9
Forestroot
  • Forestroot is the first server in the forest
  • It is a domain controller and a Global Catalog
    Server

10
MicrosoftExchange
  • Exchange 2000 is the email portion of the new
    environment
  • Serves all faculty staff, plus Distance
Education students and ESD site staff
  • Will eventually also serve Day students, Evening
    students and ESD students
  • Windows 2000 Server is required to run Exchange
    2000

11
Backup
  • Another member of the new domain is our backup
    server
  • Handles daily backup of netfiles and server
    registries plus Exchange mail databases
  • Is a Global Catalog server

12
DNS
  • The DNS member of our new domain is installed and
    running
  • This server handles the Domain Name Service for
    the domain.
  • This server is also a Global Catalog Server

13
Terminal Services
  • A new technology being introduced into this
    domain is Terminal Services
  • This member of the new domain allows access to
    on-campus resources from off-campus

14
Webadvisor
  • Webadvisor is the component of Datatel that
    allows web accessibility.
  • Using Webadvisor, users will eventually be able
to register pay for classes on-line, search for
classes, look at transcripts much more
  • Currently, there is a Webadvisor test server and
a Webadvisor production server in the new domain

15
Proxy
  • Proxy handles access to library resources from
    off-campus like EBSCOHost
  • Proxy is in its own domain
  • Eventually Proxy server will be upgraded to
Windows 2000 and migrated to a new child domain.

16
Webserver
  • Webserver hosts the Columbia College website
  • Webserver is in its own domain (ccis_web)
  • Eventually, webserver will be upgraded to Windows
2000 and migrated to a new child domain
  • Web.ccis.edu

17
Labserver
  • Labserver is in its own domain ccislab
  • Serves email to day evening students and
controls access to printers in labs
  • Will eventually be migrated to a new child domain
  • lab.ccis.edu

18
Payroll
  • Is currently in a domain by itself
  • Will be migrated to a child domain of ccis.edu
  • Ddsrv.ccis.edu

19
Other Server Projects
  • Exchange Clusters/Network Load Balancing/Front-End
    /Back-End
  • Will result in redundancy and high reliability
