Title: ObjectivesPurpose of EPA Mining Waste Scientist to Scientist Meeting
1Objectives/Purpose of EPA Mining Waste Scientist
to Scientist Meeting
- Information exchange on EPA activities related to
the state of the science regarding mining waste
issues - Identify primary mining waste issues in EPA
Regions/Programs - Match issues with existing research
- Identify major future research and study needs
- Limited Scope of Meeting
- Focus on EPA issues/activities only
- Possible future meeting(s) to incorporate/bring
together academia, USGS and other agencies,
industry, etc.
2Meeting Planning
- Steering committee approach
- Committee identified and prioritized nine issue
topics and status of current EPA research and
program/regional activities - Committee linked available research/activities to
the issue topics
3Meeting Logistics and Process
- Each session will be one half presentation, one
half question/answer - During question/answer sessions, well try to
alternate between questions raised in Las Vegas,
and questions raised via telephone and possibly
on the internet - Well try to capture main points on flip charts,
and questions raised verbally in our notes - Main points will be summarized per session at the
end of the meeting - Well give presenters a copy of questions raised
electronically the presenters may or may not
respond to these questions after the meeting
4Ongoing ORD Mining-Related Research
- 6M earmark for mining technology at Butte
Montana (Roger Wilmoth/Diana Bless contacts) - Hazardous Substance Research Center (HSRC)
research (Dale Manty contact) - Water Quality Research
- Other Related Research (e.g., EMAP, methods,
bioremediation, characterization, groundwater
fate/transport, remediation, etc). - Very Limited Research Budget
- No new money available for additional research
through FY02 - ORD FY 02 planning prioritized an additional
400K for mining waste research if ORD receives
104 of FY 01 Presidents Budget
