- Malaysia has so far being spared from HPAI

confirmed as having HPAI
3What are banned
- Day old chicks
- Fresh poultry meat
- Frozen chicken
- Products of poultry
- Eggs
4Rationale of the ban
- Prevent the chance of the HPAI Virus from coming
to Malaysian soil as HPAI can be passed to people
in close proximity to infected chickens - Eliminate risk of local poultry being infected
with HPAI
5Strategy
- Concerted effort by Ministry of Agriculture (MOA)
and Ministry of Health (MOH) in surveillance - MOA is monitoring the farms and bird sanctuary to
detect HPAI - Advice on bird to human transmission (use of PPE
mask(N95), boots, protective attires, personal
hygiene) - Awareness seminars since December to farmers
- Surveillance teams on stand-by
- Operation rooms on standby

7PUBLIC HEALTH RESPONSE - SURVEILLANCE
- Influenza like-illness surveillance
- all government outpatient departments
- health clinics
- Started since October 2003
- Till now, no significant increase no. of cases
8PUBLIC HEALTH RESPONSE - SURVEILLANCE
- Atypical pneumonia
- post SARS outbreak
- health care workers, hospital acquired illness
community acquired atypical pneumonia - must notify District Health Office, then report
to State Health Department Disease Control
Division, MOH - To date , no SARS and HPAI
9PUBLIC HEALTH RESPONSE HEALTH EDUCATION
- To farmer workers
- to practice good animal husbandary including
to use personal protective equipments mask,
gloves, apron boots - practice good personal hygiene
- Notify Dept of Veterinary Services of any
abnormal mortality in poultry farms - Those with influenza like symptoms should seek
treatment as soon as possible -
