8Special Topics in Applied Psychology
- Why dont students like to read?
- Why dont students, especially freshman, know how
to handle their freedom? - What are students thinking about instead of
academics? - What do students think of faculty?
9What do students think of faculty?
- They are smart, possibly without making an
effort. - They make a lot of money.
- They are concerned about the lives we lead.
- They share many experiences with us.
- They are like my parents, steady and reliable.
- They know a lot.
- They have power over my future.
- They are not as smart as they think they are.
- They make far less money than I am going to make,
and soon. - They have no memory of being young, or were never
young in the first place, so they are not
sympathetic to us. - They are like my parents -- they have no earthly
idea how we live or feel and what makes us tick. - Faculty are nerdy.
10What would you add to that?
11What dont students know about faculty?
- We have had to work hard to gain professional
standing and respect. - We also live within an academic and social
hierarchy that we must adjust to and manage. - Some of us are insecure about our professional
worth and our ability to teach well. - We also have interests outside of teaching that
compete with our interest in teaching.
12Competition for Attention
- Students are not homogenous in their aims,
desires, abilities or intentions. - There may be one common factor among students
that they must manage many strong competing
interests, including school, social life, family,
work, and personal concerns. - You, the faculty, are in a position of having to
compete for their attention. So you must make
your case!

15Thanks for your time! But I have to go now. I
have a very important class to study for, much
more important than yours is . . . And then my
shift at work starts and after that, I have to
pack to leave to go to a wedding back home
tomorrow. Also, its Thursday, so there are free
non-alcoholic shots at my church . . . And I have
a diving lesson. Seeya!
