2Recruiting
- Flyers
- Have careful word choice in describing the study
- Handed out in very popular areas, age appropriate
- Have to be IRB approved
- Be friendly and knowledgeable about the
information - on the flyer
- Phone recruiting
- the best person to make the initial contact is
- Friendly, enjoys talking to people
- Understanding, Relaxed
- Unscripted, Considerate
- Script
- Confidential, this study is a confidential study
- This is not a marketing study
- Who funds the study
- Subsections, for any situation that might happen
3Recruiting Continued
- First Five Minutes
- The initial contactor needs to make sure the
following has be stated or asked - Introduce yourself, hello my name is (1st name
only) - We really need your help
- Do you have a few minutes to talk?
- Get the respondent to agree to talk with you
- Restate your credibility and make sure the tone

be a good time to call, just call) - The initial contactor needs to
- Speak slowly and clearly
- Practice with friends and family
- Practice by talking on the phone
- Have someone listen to them and hear their voice
on the phone
4What It Takes to Make an Assessment
- Determination
- Different ideas and opinions
- DSM-IV criteria
- Drafts, and dedicated staff members
- Focus Groups
- Grant funded criteria
- Beta testing and sample scenarios
- Careful word choice
5Terminology
- Major Concerns
- There needs to be a considerable amount of time
determining word choice in assessments and papers - There needs to be a unified category system for
prescription drugs. Three Categories - Stimulants
- Opioids
- Sedatives
- There needs to be a unified way in prescription
terminology - misuse,
- abuse,
- dependence,
- illicit use,
- Unsanctioned use
- Diversion
6Stimulants
Main questions Who is using stimulants? How are
stimulants being used? How are stimulants being
obtained? Who is most at risk for illegal use of
prescription stimulants? What are factors that
are used in determining usage? Is there any
information missing about stimulant use?
7Misuse of Meth. and Prescription Stimulants
amongYouths and Young Adults in the Community.
Li-Tzy Wu a, Daniel J. Pilowsky, William E.
Schlenger c, Deborah M. Galvin
- Main points
- Focused on gender as a significant factor in
stimulant misuse - National survey
- Stimulant misusers were categorized into three
subgroups meth users only, meth and prescription
stimulant users, and prescription stimulant users
only - About 1 in 10 youths reported any misuse of
stimulants in their lifetime. - Prescription stimulant misuse occurred earlier
and was more frequent than meth misuse. - About 47 of meth misusers reported prescription
stimulant misuse. - Among misusers of meth and prescription
stimulants, males were more likely than females
to misuse meth. - Multidrug use is common among stimulant misusers.
8Misuse of "study drugs" Prevalence,
Consequences and Implications for Policy. Sussman
S., Pentz M., Spruijt-Metz D., Miller T
- Main Points
- Nicknames Kiddy Coke, Cramming Pill
- Pills can be sold from anywhere between 3-15
dollars per pill (street value) - Misuse of study drugs have tend to be more in the
college age group - Study drugs are being misused annually by
approximately 4 of older teens and emerging
adults - People between the ages of 16-24 are most at risk
- Use is slightly higher in very large urban areas.
- More misuse has been reported in white males.
- Misuse at Historically Black Universities is low.
- Non medical use was higher in students in
sororities and fraternities. - Can be taken oral or through other administration
routes - Can have similar consequences (if used other than
orally) to crack. - Taking it oral has less effects of dependence.
- There are other drugs that can be used that are
believed to be less addictive.
9Non-medical use of prescription stimulants among
US college students prevalence and correlates
from a national survey Sean Esteban McCabe, John
R. Knight, Christian J. Teter, Henry Wechsler
- Main Points
- Examined the rates and correlates of non-medical
use of prescription stimulants (Ritalin,
Dexedrine or Adderall) among US college students - A self-administered mail survey.
- One hundred and nineteen nationally
representative 4-year colleges in the United
States - More white males than any other demographic
- A small number had life time use
- In many cases both or at least one parent has a
degree - Other side factors such as housing, sorority and
fraternity, grades, race, age, and gender were
taken in to consideration - The more competitive the school the higher the
use of stimulants - Non commuter schools have the highest use
- Those who abuse other substances were more likely
to abuse Prescription Drugs
10Facts Page
- Nonmedical users of prescription stimulant drugs
are more likely than other nonmedical drug users
to be poly drug users.(1) - Nonmedical users of prescription stimulants have
over four times greater odds than other drug
users to experience three or more prescription
stimulants in non-oral routes of
administration.(1) - Some study have shown that there will be an
increase of elderly prescription drug users in
upcoming years(2)
11Message Boards on Stimulants
- Whatever you do, DO NOT let your son go off it
cold turkey. Let him taper off. Cut the dose in
half for a few days, then cut off altogether. And
all the while, constantly monitor him and ask him
how he feels. If he is showing signs of increased
depression or personality changes, let your
doctor know IMMEDIATELY. good luck! - Dear friend, Is it Ok to take Prozac first thing
in the AM followed by Adderall about an hour
later? Have tried this and it certainly gets me
out of my persistent state of lethargy.
(depression?) Am concerned about cardiovascular
effects. Please communicate. Thank you - Hello. My doctor will only let me take 15 mg per
day of Adderall. It used to work great. I need
