Structure
  • Main Argument
  • Process of knowing
  • Dialogical Triad
  • - Buhler s triadic organon model
  • -Tension
  • -Internal Relations
  • -Object
  • -Strength of relations
  • Conclusion

3
Main Argument
  • Ivana Markova
  • Brings together concept of dialogue and theory of
    social representations
  •   Develops a new theory of social knowledge

4
Process of knowing
  • Traditional epistemologies
  • (Platonic/ Cartesian approach, Durkheim etc)
  • -Knower (individual or collective)
  • -Object of knowledge
  • Mental representations
  • Collective representations
  • Dialogically based theory of knowledge
  • -Knower Ego- Alter
  • -Object of knowledge
  • Symbols are constructed socially

5
Dialogical triad
6
Buhler s triadic organon model
  • 3 functions of language
  • -expressive
  • -appealing
  • -representational
  • Representation capacity of mind to imagine,
fantasise and create something new using symbols,
    not to mirror the world
  • Ego-Alter- Object can function only as a whole
  • Critique stability
  • But, knowledge a dynamic relation
  • Change

7
Tension
  • Moscovicis semiotic triangle Presence of
    TENSION
  • Tension expresses impetus to an action or to a
    change
  • -No communication unless participants are drawn
    together by tension
  • -No social action unless oppositions in tension
    are negotiated, evaluated judged
  • Participants communicative choices produce
    different kinds of tension?
  • Implications for the process of knowing

8
Internal relations
  • Relations simultaneously sequentially dynamic
  • Dialogue is constituted of different kinds of the
Ego- Alter (I- group, group- culture, I- you)
that create different kinds of tensions?
    discontinuities, abrupt changes, semantic
    reversals, hidden polemics
  • In dialogue we must presuppose
  • -polyphasia heteroglossia
  • -co-existence of different styles of thinking
  • -co-presence of different voices in communication
  • Change non-linear multifaceted

9
Object
  • Representations of objects are cultural
representations penetrate all spheres of life
  • Modern world technology?
  • Boundaries of objects dialogically formed and
    transformed
  • Fluid and transient objects?
  • Scientific and public disputes
  • Tension in communication between Ego-Alter

10
Strength of relations
  • Social representations
  • -belief- based/ Ego- Alter in the foreground
  • -knowledge- based/ Ego- Object in the foreground
  • In reality, knowledge beliefs are involved
  • Depends on the style of thinking and reasoning

11
Conclusion
  • Dialogicality is the capacity of the human mind
to conceive, create and communicate about social
realities in terms of the other.
  • Social representations are distinguished from
    mental and collective representations. Social
representations are embedded in history and
culture and stored in language. They manifest
themselves in public discourses and social
thinking about phenomena, which touch in some
fundamental ways upon social realities, e.g.
    political, ecological or health related.
  • The theory of social representations places
communication and the concept of change in the
    centre of social psychology.
