2Like this satellite, the Earth is constant moving
around the Sun. The path that an object takes
around an other, larger object is called an orbit.
What is this satellite doing?
Every 3651/4 days the Earth makes a complete trip
around the sun.

Can you see the axis that the Earth is spinning
on?
4While the earth is orbiting the sun it is also
spinning around on its own. This is called a
rotation, or one full spin, on its axis.
The axis is an imaginary line by which something
spins.
5- Imagine if we could stretch out our planet in to
a Octahedron look how it spins on its vertex
6Notice how again it spins on its vertex the same
thing happens with the Earth
7Now can you see the axis that the Earth is
spinning on?
8The rotation of the Earth on its axis gives us
our seasons.
- Our seasons occur as a result of the uneven
heating of our planet by the sun. Watch how the
light of the sun travels across our planet over
the course of a year.

10When the Sun shines on the Earth like this, what
season is it in the northern hemisphere?
Thats right its Summer Time!
11The more light an area receives from the sun, the
more heat that area will receive.
12This is known as the Solstice.
- In the northern hemisphere this is the longest
day of the year and it marks the beginning of the
summer or the Summer Solstice. (June 22)
- But this is the shortest day of the year and the
beginning of winter for the southern hemisphere.
This is the Winter Solstice. (December 22)
13Look at this model of the earth and the sun. Can
you tell me where the Earth is during the summer
for the Northern Hemisphere?
14Thats right its point B!! But how can the sun
be further away from the sun during the summer
and closer during the winter?
15Because the area of the planet that gets the
light from the sun, also gets the heat from the
sun.
16When the Sun shines on the Earth like this what
season is it, in the northern hemisphere?
- Correct again, it is the Spring, or Fall.
- At this point during the year the North and South
Poles both are getting equal light.
- There will be 12 hours of light, and 12 hours of
darkness.
17This is called the Equinox.
- If the days are getting longer, then this would
be the Vernal Equinox, or the first day of
Spring
- If the days are getting shorter, then this would
be the Autumnal Equinox, or the first day of fall.
18Equinox is a Latin word.
- Equi is Latin for Equal.
- Nox is Latin for night.
- Equal night Equinox
