Title: Population Growth and Change

1
Population Growth and Change
  • Chapter 23 Lesson 1

2
Population Growth
  • Mexico City was the most populated city in the
world in the late 20th century.
  • Happening all over the world.
  • At the beginning of the second millennium the
population was around 6 billion people.
  • A millennium is one thousand years.
  • When your grandparents were in school the
population was about half of what it is now.

3
Population Growth
  • Many people are moving to the city from the
    country.
  • Cities offer more job opportunities than rural
    areas.
  • Cities are growing so fast that they cannot
provide the basic necessities of life.
  • Clean water and housing.

4
Population Growth
  • By 2000 their were more than 20 megacities in the
    world.
  • A region with 10 million or more people.
  • Calcutta
  • Megacity
  • One of the worlds poorest cities.
  • 600,000 people are homeless.
  • Mother Teresa
  • Roman Catholic nun who worked in Calcutta for
    more than 40 years.
  • Set up soup kitchens, hospices, homeless
    shelters.
  • Received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her
    work in Calcutta.
  • Do not wait for leaders do it alone, person to
    person.

5
Population Movement
  • Migration of people from rural to urban areas
    increased during the Industrial Revolution.
  • More people moved from the countryside to the
cities in the first half of the twentieth
    century.
  • Economic opportunities

6
Population Movement
  • By the 1960s people began moving from developing
    counties to more developed countries.
  • Seeking a better life.
  • Populations in developing countries were growing
so fast that governments could no longer provide
    housing or clean water.
  • Unemployment is high in developing countries.
  • Madagascar
  • Population is increasing at more than 3 per
    year.
  • Population will double in less than 25 years.
  • United States
  • Population is increasing at about 0.9 per year.
  • Population will double in about 77 years.

7
Immigration
  • Population changes are important because they
affect how people live and work.
  • Scientist who study population trends
  • Demographers
  • Many demographers believe that the status of
women affects the rate of population growth.
  • Developed countries often have good opportunities
    for education for women.
  • Educated women have children later and fewer of
    them.
  • Developing nations have fewer opportunities for
    jobs and education.

8
Immigration
  • Immigration
  • Process of people moving to a new country to stay
permanently or for a long time.
  • Changing the cultures of many developed
    countries.
  • France
  • Received many immigrants from former French
    Colonies in North Africa.
  • Now one of their national foods is couscous
  • Some demographers now believe that more people in
France now attend mosques than churches.

9
A Population Explosion?
  • Some demographers spoke of a population
    explosion.
  • Like the explosion of a bomb.
  • Painted very grim pictures of the worlds future.

10
A Population Explosion?
  • Today, many scientist see evidence of slowing
    population growth.
  • Zero Population growth has been achieved in some
    developed countries.
  • Just enough babies are born to balance population
    loss.
  • Some demographers even think that by later in the
twenty-first century, the worlds population may
    begin to shrink.
