2 Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) First feature film
to have a completely computer generated image
character a stained glass knight coming out of a
stained glass window.
This special effect was done by an up and
coming company named Pixar who has in the last
few years made a name for itself as a great
special effects powerhouse.
3 They finally made it big with the release of
the first ever full length computer generated
animated film in 1995 Toy Story.
Pixar went on to create many commercials in the
early 90s.
Pixar went on to create A Bugs Life in 1998 and
Toy Story 2 in 1999. Both being big blockbusters
leading the way for bigger and better computer
generated animated films.
4Along with A Bugs Life Toy Story 2, came
Monsters, INC., in 2001.
And true to the rest of Pixars smash hits,
Monsters, INC., was a complete hit with the
holiday crowd.
And coming in 2003 is Finding Nemo
5Getting back on track
Ghostbusters 2 along with Indiana Jones and the
Last Crusade were two films in the late 80s to
incorporate special effects.
Though they were not ground breaking in a sense,
they too were a great step forward towards thing
s yet to come.
While theses films were out, there was one
filmmaker that was experimenting with special
effects so that he could move on to bigger things
in the years to come. That man was James Cameron
and the film was The Abyss.
6James Cameron worked on The Abyss, and through
working with Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) was
able to create a water tentacle that could change
its and distort its face to look like that of
stars Ed Harris and
Mary Elizabeth Masterantonio.
From this experiment, James Cameron was given the
creative freedom to proceed with the sequel to
his film Terminator, Terminator 2 Judgment Day.
Which went on to be a worldwide smash
blockbuster. In the film was a liquid metal
robot, that was accomplished by ILM.
7If Terminator 2 opened peoples eyes to the world
of computer generated images, then the next movie
was going to blow everyone away.
Jurassic Park came out in June of 1993 and
completely changed the way movies would be seen
forever.
Jurassic Park, which was directed by Stephen
Spielberg, created the most realistic looking
dinosaurs the world had ever seen and opened up
another doorway in the world of computer
generated images (CGI).
8Between 1993 thru 1995 there were a few standout
films that utilized CGI to help push the story
forward, some of those were
Speed,
Die Hard With A Vengeance,
and Batman Forever.
Forest Gump,
was a breakout year for special effects in films.
Movies used CGI to enhance their stories many
times over. Some of these films included
Twister,
Mission Impossible,
and Independence Day
just to name a few.
9Brought with it many special effects films,
though they were all very expensive, not all of
them were hits and most of them were not
critically well made.
Four of those movies were
Men In Black
The Lost World Jurassic Park

11Though many films have misused the special
effects, by hiding behind them for faults in the
story.
Some of which come to mind, I wont mention them
for too long
brought with it a whole slew of movies that were
smart, critically were great, and the stories
were amazing they found themselves mostly on the
top of the charts in grosses.
Some of those are
12The future is looking good for Computer Generated
Images in film.
Filmmakers are now using the effects to help make
the story better, and are profiting greatly from
it. And there is no stop in sight either. Effects
will only get better and better as the years go
on. There is no reach for what the human
imagination can do when they are behind a
computer.
