  • Rome is in Italy, the boot shaped peninsula in
    the Mediterranean Sea.
  • The Alps and the Po River border to the north,
    while the Appenine Mountains run the length of
    the nation.
  • The Tiber River provides transportation and food
    for the Romans.
  • Barriers provided only limited protection from
    invaders.

  • In 509BC, Rome became a republic that lasted for
    500 years.
  • Patricians, or wealthy landowners, dominated
    Roman society.
  • Common people were called Plebeians. Slaves were
    the lowest class.
  • Early government consisted of a Senate (300
    Patricians) and 2 consuls elected to administer
    laws.
  • An assembly of plebeians had little real power.

    patricians and plebeians (if they owned land).
  • Army was divided into legions (6000 soldiers per
    legion).
