Title: FAST
1FAST FOR HOPE
2What is Fast for Hope?
- Fast for Hope is a fundraising effort that
supports both our local communities and the world
at large. - During Rotarys anniversary week, the week
surrounding February 23rd, is the time when most
District 5950 Clubs participate in Fast for Hope.
3 When did Fast for Hope originate?
- In 1986, District 5950 initiated the Fast for
Hope program to fund World Community Service
(WCS) projects. It has been expanded to include
Neighborhood Community Services. Funds are split
roughly 50-50 between the two - This program allows our District to respond to
humanitarian needs around the world by providing
funding for clean water, supplies, medical care,
relief support and food.
4How does it work?
- When we Fast for Hope, Rotarians designate one
weekly meeting meal and then abstain or eat
sparingly. - The money saved is assigned to a greater good.
- Some Clubs simply build this donation into their
annual budgets.
5TODAY
- Fast for Hope contributions are divided equally
between World Community Service projects and
Neighborhood Community Service projects.
6It does make a difference
- These monies help provide the basic daily needs
for those less fortunate than ourselves - plus
aid the progress toward self sufficiency. - Our goal for 2008-09 is 15 per member, minimum
10 - with 100 participation from the District
5950 Clubs.
7Special requests andemergency relief
- Fast for Hope dollars allocated to WCS and NCS
have typically been used for special requests and
emergency relief that do not fall within the
guidelines of the traditional Matching Grant
Programs offered through the Rotary International
Foundation.
8 Fast for Hope A Special Request
- In 1993, 4000 was sent to the Leon, Nicaragua,
Rotary Club. They hired a manufacturer to make
300 desks and 300 chairs for the local elementary
school. - Prior to this project, the children were sitting
on the ground and practicing their writing in the
dirt!
9Children of the Andes School
- In recent years, World Community Service made a
matching contribution to Minneapolis 9, Hopkins,
and Minnetonka Clubs for the support of the
Children of the Andes School program in Quito,
Ecuador.
10Project Nino De Los Andes Quito, Ecuador
- The money purchased food for the pre-school
children of very poor working families. - The children arrive at the school in a bus
provided by Minneapolis 9, Hopkins and
Minnetonka Clubs and wear Rotary sweatshirts.
11Visioning Trip to Haiti
In Haiti, 17-23 of the children die before the
age of five. Over the next three years, this
Rotary project will yield 141 wells, 1200
latrines, plus health and sanitation education.
12Fast for Hope Disaster Relief
- In recent years, World Community Service
committed 6000 of matching funds for disaster
relief in Columbo, Sri Lanka and Rapalle, India.
13Fast for Hope Disaster Relief
- The funds were combined with other gifts to
enable Feed My Starving Children to ship
several containers of meal packets to these
devastated areas. Thats about 570,000 meals. -
