Overcrowding in cities 1980s saw the introduction of the one child policy couples were only allowed one baby. The rate of population increase has dramatically slowed. (India is now likely to overtake China as the largest population in the world)
Living conditions improved this meant that people lived longer because they were healthier. (Life expectancy was 40 in 1949, now 70) Not enough food to go around Families who only have 1 child receive free schooling and good jobs and better quality housing. There are more boys than girls in China. 90million men are unable to find wives because there are not enough women.
A bigger population meant that the army could be increased in size. The cost of looking after the population is too high (schools, hospitals etc) Families who have more than 1 child are fined, can be sacked or forced to have abortions. There are not enough young people to look after the huge numbers of elderly people.
