2What is an invasive species
Invasive species are a species that has invaded
an area that it has never been found In before it
can be both good and bad for the area it has
invaded depending on what it Is.
3Some invasive species that are now found in
Minnesota are
Zebra Mussels, Spiny water flea, Round goby, Mute
swan, Ruffe,
Eurasian collared-dove, rusty crayfish,
Tubenose goby sea lamprey, Grass carp, big head
and silver carp, New Zealand mud snail, Common
carp, White perch.
4Here they all are.
5Mute Swan
6Twenty nine of these birds were reported to be
found in the wild in five counties. Of these
reports the majority of them were adults. Of
these reports the majority of them were reported
because these birds were found harassing loons
or trumpeter swans.
7Zebra mussles
Zebra mussles
8The zebra mussel is a small striped invasive
mussel that was brought to North America in the
waters of trans-Atlantic freighters in the late
1980s. The ability of these mussels to attach in
large to ship in large clumps can create numerous
problems, such as clogging intake pipes for
industry or killing native mussels. Attachment of
the adults to recreational boats can serve to
move zebra mussels to other waters. Its
scientific name is Dreissena polymorpha.
9Sp ny water flea
10It was brought over to North America in ballast
water in the late 1980s and first appeared in the
Great Lakes. Some species of larger fish have
been shown to feed heavily on the spiny water
flea. Its scientific name is (Bythotrephes
longimanus)
11Round goby
12This was found in the Duluth superior harbor in
1995. Since then the population Largely
increased. Now it is in all of the great lakes
the Detroit river and lake Superior. Its
scientific name is (Neogobius melanostomus).
13ruff
e
14The ruffe is a small European member of the perch
family that is from central and eastern Europe.
It was introduced to Duluth harbor, probably in
tanker waters, around 1985, and is spreading to
other rivers and bays around Lake Superior.
15Rusty crayfish
16- Rusty crayfish are native to streams in the Ohio,
Kentucky and Tennessee region. - They now live here because anglers use them as
bait, rusty crayfish are and can severely reduce
lake and stream vegetation, taking away native
fish and their prey of cover and food. - They also reduce native crayfish populations.
- There scientific name is (Orconectes rusticus).
17Eursion collared dove
18Eurasian Collared Doves breed nearly year round
in their native range. They build a flimsy twig
nest in trees, on building ledges, and in thick
bushes
The Eurasian Collared Dove, originally from
Asia, is a new species in Minnesota. It was
introduced to the Bahamas Islands in 1975, spread
to Florida, and is expanding its range across
the USA. Populations are established in
many eastern and northern states well into the
Great Plains region.
19Tubenose goby
20The goby is a bottom-dwelling fish that has great
potential for causing impacts on Great Lakes
fisheries. Originally the round goby and the
tubenose goby were introduced into the St. Claire
River in 1990, probably via contaminated ballast
water of transoceanic ships.
21Sea lamprey
22They entered the Great Lakes through the Welland
Canal about 1921. They contributed greatly to the
decline of whitefish and lake trout in the Great
Lakes. Since 1956, the governments of the United
States and Canada, working jointly through the
Great Lakes Fishery Commission, have implemented
a successful sea lamprey control program.
23Grass carp
24- The grass carp, or white amur, is a very large
fish in the minnow family (Cyprinidae). - The body is torpedo shaped with moderately large
scales, while the head has no scales. - Its scientific name is ( Ctenopharyngodon
idella).
25New Zeland mud snail
26Native to New Zealand, it was accidentally
introduced with imported rainbow trout in Idaho
in the 1980s and into the Great Lakes via ballast
water from ocean going ships. Who's scientific
name is
.
(Potamopyrgus antipodarum)
27White perch
28- The white perch is a fish in the temperate basses
family. - The adults range between 7 to 12 inches long.
- White perch are native to Atlantic coastal region
of the United States and invaded the Great Lakes
through the Erie and Welland canals. - Who's scientific name is (Morone americana).
